I think your friend makes up too small a part of the first frame. I think he gets a bit lost against the face of the mountain and we can't really see him in action.
Whereas #2 - It's full of energy and movement. We can really see the athlete in action.

I prefer the second as well - you can really see what the climber is doing in that one.

Great pictures, I love the feeling of vertigo in the first one looking all the way down to the ground. How did you manage to get the shots - were you climbing yourself or peering down over the cliff edge? My brother is a keen climber and I have always wondered how I could get better shots rather than just stood at the bottom of the cliff face looking up at him.

Rebecca...I do climb but to take photos you have to set up a rope and hang from that, here´s a shot someone took of me takeing the photos above.

Very nice shots, I still think the position of the cllimber changes the effect on the viewer. The second just looks more natural.
