Night shot - Golden Temple in Amritsar

This is a hand-held night shot showing the Harmandir Sahib (The Abode of God); the holiest of the Sikh places of worship, in Amritsar, in Punjab State, India. It is often referred to as the "Golden Temple".

A place with a lot of blood in its recent (perhaps ancient too) history.
    Excellent for a hand-held.

Somehow, although I like the way you shoot all your photographs, I have a certain preference for your night shots like the one above...it shows feelings and moods and colours galore. Even the half structure at the RHS is not a nuisance at all, fact is, it balances the shot well. Well done.

Thanks Izzie - I've generally been quite happy with my night shots, so tend not to take that many of them because they seem to be relatively easy to get looking great. On this trip I decided to really concentrate on my people shots, which is an area where I felt I needed more work and practice.

With regards to the overhang in the shot; yes, I put it there on purpose in order to balance out the image. There was simply too much unoccupied negative space in the upper right hand corner without it. I was really looking for overall balance; the well lit building and causeway, the reflection in the water and the final touch was the overhang to balance the scene out.

Saw this on my work screen earlier today, but wanted to see it on this home monitor. It's as good as I thought it was.

I, too, thougth about the inclusion of the structure at the right hand side, but I now acknowledge the thinking as to why it was included in the image.

Just to add to the discussion, here is the same image without the overhang. A combination of a more agressive crop and cloning the black background to remove it the bit that I did not crop out. There just seems to be too much black in the upper right for my liking.

I find this version far less compelling.

A very compelling image, and quite remarkable for a hand-held image in that light. I wouldn't be able to manage that.

I'm the odd one out: I much prefer it without the overhang. I get the point about negative space, but I find the overhang to be a distraction that draws my eye away from the main lines of the image.

Moving it around in lytebox helps a lot in determining how good one is over the other. It is a good program.
