The shrine is where the Honen Matsuri festival takes place every year on March 15. The symbols come from ancient tradition where the father sky must impregnate mother earth to ensure a good harvest in the fall.

People visit the shrine to either pray to have a child or to offer thanks once the child has been born,

Let's not go there. The big one is carved from a piece of Japanese Cypress wood and weighs 280 kg (620 lbs) and is 2.5m (8 ft) long.

Proportionately though, mother-earth is bigger still.

One advantage of the LyteBox not working is that when I clicked on the first image, I got whisked off to your Flickr photostream so now I am 'following' you there.
