Roller Hockey Training

I had a night off from training a couple of weeks ago due to injury, so thought I would take my camera to the training session instead.

The sports hall is not particularly well lit, so I had to use a high ISO to get a fast enough shutter speed. The pics are a bit grainy due to this, even after cleaning them up.

Despite having played for years, I actually found it hard to predict the flow of action to get a good shot! And the other players kept getting in the way and crowding the composition.

A question rather than a comment.

Because there are a lot of lines of different colours on the floor of different colours and the floor itself is a strongish colour, do you think that converting them to B & W help focus our attention on the action; i.e. taking the colour out as an element in the picture?

I have converted the first couple to black and white.

I think I prefer the B&W versions. As you suggested, it takes away the attention away from the orange rink floor, green doors, and multi-coloured lines. Not the best colour combination for a sports hall...

In terms of the noise, I was shooting at 1/320, ISO6400 and between f/4 and f/5.6 depending on the focal length.
Short of splashing out lots of money on a better lens, anything I could do to reduce the noise given the indoor setting?

I have to confess to not noticing the noise until you mentioned it.

As Colin has often written, we tend to make an awful lot of noise about noise, as if it was intrinsically something evil to be avoided at all costs. In a case like this, I think it can add to that feeling of 'grittiness'.
