Canon Shutter Count Software

I hope that you will not get this as advertisement. My program APT (www.astroplace.net) can determine the shutter count for all Digic 3 and 4 cameras. This feature is available in the time unlimited demo version, so in fact you can check your shutter counter for free

I had also faced a problem of finding the shutter count for my Canon when EOSInfo did not work. I solved the problem for myself and also shared it for others at www.eoscount.com. You can check the shutter count for free and without leaving the browser...

Doesn't work for 1Ds3 - just returns a shutter count of 0

Yep - it installs an active-x control, but that appears to be all. Says it'll read the count from the first camera connected, but it's not doing a darn thing on my system

General consensus is that Canon have the 1D3 / 1Ds3 / 1D4 locked down tighter than nuclear launch codes though

I tried out Magic lantern yesterday for the first time, and found that it had a shutter-count which was nice... except that it was wrong.

Interesting piece of software, though.

That's what it did for me too – just installed active-x control.
I just wanted corroboration, that it was not my end stuffing up.
I attached three cameras - and NOTHING.

1. It only works for 32 bit browsers -- so first thing one needs to do if running Win7x64 is choose the 32 bit version of the browser from the start menu.

2. Next up, one either has to either temp disable Explorer Protected Mode, or just add http://EOScount.com to the trusted sites zone.

Unfortunately, it still won't read 1D3 / 1Ds3 / 1D4 counts

Thank you, Colin, for helping me to get to the bottom of this. A 32-bit Internet Explorer is indeed needed, because a 64-bit one cannot install or run a 32-bit ActiveX control. The EOS Count control is compiled for 32-bit because the Canon SDK is distributed in 32-bit form only.

At this point I don't believe temporarily disabling the Protected Mode is needed, nor is addition to the Trusted Sites zone needed. However, if the control does not instantiate properly in a 32-bit browser, this workaround could be tried.

Colin verified that the 1Ds3 does not send the correct shutter count back to the PC, but I would be interested to know about the 1D4. The 1D4 is a camera that came out after both 5D Mark II and 7D, both of which work with EOSCount (hoping the magic of DIGIC IV processor will work in this case).

I have verified that the 1D Mark IV works with EOS Count. I tried two cameras at a rental store today (since I don't have a 1D4), and both gave me the shuttter count reading.

Hi Colin,

Please find the Log panel in the lower-right part. If your camera supports reading of shutter count, you will see the message "Shutter counter: XXXX" as soon as you make a connection to your camera.

I gave it another try, but the software is saying "cannot detect camera" and the camera just flashes "busy" as soon as the connection is made.

Also, I'm pretty sure it won't return a valid shutter count; Apparantly Canon have locked it down pretty tightly.

I've often wondered how important is it to know the shutter count on a camera?

Is there a warranty from any manufacturer that states in effect: "the shutter on this camera is hereby warranted to not fail before XX,XXX number of shutter actuations."

The shutter can fail at two thousand or 900,000 actuations. The only warranty coverage one has is if the age of the camera falls within the warranty period from date of purchase.

That being the case, how much useful information does the shutter count provide?

The statistical life of a shutter can only be ascertained by testing many cameras, but there is variation in the failure life of a group of cameras being tested. The statistical average doesn't apply to any particular camera.

Isn't this akin to predicting when the transmission in your car will fail? At least in this case, there is a warranty that covers transmissions up to a specified date/mileage.

I can't fault your logic Glenn, but for me, it's similar to knowing how many miles a 2nd hand car has done; if it's a 5 year old car - it's done 5000 miles and it's selling for $5000 then it's a bargin, but if it's done 300,000 miles then it's no bargin. It probably shouldn't quite work that way for cameras, but in my mind it still does.

Probably what folks SHOULD do is pickup a worn-out 40D - have the shutter mechanism and mirror actuator replaced - and then essentially enjoy a new camera at a good price.
