Colin --I got my copy of the book recommended in the CandC tutorial and am reading thru it. I'm really confused on the concept of down-sampling. I'll never understand the math involved, but how does one downsample --just reduce the size (ppi) of the image? Like I have to for web publishing --from 300dpi to usually under 200dpi for ease of downloading?

Lynne, Colin,

TinyPic has a limit of 1600px on longest edge.

If you attempt to upload larger than that, it always downsizes to 1599, which is the "tell" that this has happened.

If you want to transfer the fullsize image, you'll have to e-mail (but be careful how, or that will downsize it too), or use a file sharing site like DropBox or MediaFire.

I have moved to DropBox as I got fed up with the ads on MediaFire.

I was a happy Mediafire user ... until they wouldn't take my money via Paypal anymore!

These days I just use Google Drive as a web-based service ... first 5GB are free.

Hi Both, actually I feel quite pleased with myself, as I have signed up to Dropbox and do use it to put the photography pdfs I buy onto my iPad from the Mac, that is probably the most advanced thing I am doing at the moment!

Colin, did the email make the image smaller again? Sorry if it did, perhaps I should just give up now

Hi Lynne,

I've had a good look at it - and a bit of a play with it. Not great results I'm afraid. I think a couple of things are happening ... first up, we have the actual motion blur (which is pretty bad), but (second up) I think it's compounded by the in-camera JPEG processing to the point where I'm struggling to make sense of it.

It really becomes a compromise ... the more aggressively I sharpen it, the less the blur becomes, but the more the faces look over-sharpened ... so really just can win.

I bought the local paper last night and one of my images had been printed as the charity said. They (the paper) didn't credit me, the reporter's name (who wasn't actually there!) is next to the article and my image, so it looks as if he took it. It would have been nice to have had my 15 nano second of fame , but if he was happy to put his name to it, then it can't have been that bad

Thank you SO MUCH for your efforts, it is much appreciated and I will let them have your version and I am sure they will appreciate it as well.

One of the reasons I shot in jpeg and not RAW (apart from thinking I had prepared properly and wouldn't need to do much to them, DOH!) was because I only have two CF cards a 4 and 8 GB. I knew I would be taking quite a few at the college project shoot in the morning and was worried I would run out of space for the charity shoot in the evening, so was trying to economize on space.

As it happened I didn't use anything like the space I thought I would on the college shoot, so probably could have easily stayed in RAW and done the charity ones as well and probably have space to spare!! But that is lack of experience and not knowing the working capacity of things such a memory cards.

I clearly did a 'proper job' of messing up the group one which is an achievement in itself but not one I am going to repeat in a hurray

This has been a massive learning experience for me, mainly thanks to all the kind CiC members who have helped me, and I am grateful for that. Onwards and upwards as they say, thanks again everyone

You can also be sure that it has been useful to many others.

Tell you a story Lynne,

About this time last year I shot an all day vocal training workshop lead by the singer Yulia ...



From those who participated they choose roles in an evening concert ...



And I even got some great shots of Yulia as well ...



It's a tough environment to shoot in - no flash during the concert (so left all lighting equipment in the car) - shutter speeds down as low as 1/20th @ max ISO @ widest aperture -- but with the aid of a good tripod it all worked out well ... until ...

... after the show when I'd started packing up I got the word that Yulia would like some fan photos. The only "suitable" lens I had was a 16-35 - and I couldn't get it to autofocus (turns out I hadn't fully twisted it into place) -- so I ended up (initially) having to try to manually focus - with no flash - with the star waiting. Got enough keepers in the end, but it was pretty touch and go for a while. Yours was better then some of mine!

Thanks Chaps, what lovely big grins those fans have got, you can just see how excited they are at meeting their idol, wonderful images.

I take your point Colin and I suppose I have got to caught up in trying to learn everything properly, I forgot that it isn't an exact science and sometimes even the best photographers have that unexpected moment to deal with. I appreciate you sharing that with me and it has reminded me why I love photography so much and to 'chill' a bit more when things don't go to plan.

Decided to 'play' today and took the point and shoot to a Christmas Fayre at a local National Trust garden and house. It was super and this little fella popped along to get me in the Christmas mood!



A bit early I know but let me be the first to wish Colin, Dave and all the members of CiC a wonderful Christmas and very Happy 2013.

By the way, the star of the show is Yulia MacLean (www.yulia.co.nz) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yulia_MacLean) - I'd been to one of her concerts about 5 years previous, but had never met her prior to the day before when I went to an arranged meeting where she was staying (along with her husband) at her sister in law's house. Gave me a big hug -- she's just the nicest person. If anyone ever gets a chance to go to one of her concerts I'd say "go for it" ... she gets the audience endeared and "eating out of her hand" within minutes, and her voice is unbelievable (I'm told that most singers stick to about a 2 octave range -- she works 5 1/2!). I noticed that during her coaching session she was telling the young hopefuls that the idea placement for a microphone was about 2 finger widths in front of the mouth, and yet she had it about 12 to 18 inches in front of hers. I asked her why she doesn't follow her own advice and she said if she puts it that close she bursts the diaphragm in the mike!
