    L. Paul and Urban Domeij. thank you so much. I will give it another try.

Wow! John, thank you! Your edit looks like an advertisement for a children's movie Beautiful and fantastical!

Thank you all for your replies. It will be a while before I can do an edit like the Geoff and John but it is nice to know what is possible, even with just Elements 9. I have a lot to learn.

Not! Your edited versions are amazing. Thank you for playing and showing what is possible. I have a great imagination, but my post processing skills are still very basic. It's wonderful to see what is possible with creative editing. A BIG thank you!

I tried again following Geoff's advice and the follow up corrections to my attempts.

Still not perfect but improved, and I learned how to work with layers, skew a door, place a photo and re-size a photo within a photo.

And it was kind of fun once I got over my frustration. Thank you everyone.

When it comes to pasting an image, after selection and copying to the clipboard. Creating a new background Ctrl+N just creates the 'background space' which is white, or preferably transparent.

You then have to paste (Ctrl +C) into the newly created area. It is possible to paste as a new layer directly into the actual work in progress.

But I like to create a new image and save it (in a format which supports transparency) so all the hard work cannot be lost if something goes wrong with the project. Regular saving of the work in progress is also a good safety measure.

The saved individual images can then be assembled together by opening each item from your files, then using Select All (Ctrl+A; Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste as a new layer into the main image background layer stack.
