Colours at the market

Well most people know my black and white photography on here and even though I always shoot in colour and process into black and white I generally just post the monochrome shots on CiC.

I thought I'd try Fuji Velvia film emulation in camera the other day while wandering around the Fruit and Vegetable Market. No great shots, but this is what the camera kicks out in .jpg mode while shooting film emulation.

This is a dusty and drab place, but you get some real pop when shooting Velvia.

Which Fuji are you shooting with?

Sharon, I could be wrong; however the Nikon cameras have a Picture Control setting. One of the settings is Vivid which emulates Fuji Velvia film.
I stand to be corrected. Please forgive if I am in error.

I didn't know that Nikon Vivid was a direct emulation of Velvia, but colours are more 'vivid' and punchy. Obviously, you can fine tune things in camera as well, but vivid is more of a general punch across all colour ranges.

Which Fuji are you shooting with?

X100S as a walkabout, Sharon. I'll look forward to some daytime shots in the souks with this camera. With the leaf shutter and built in ND filter is will be good at overpowering the sun even with the built in flash, but I'll be carrying a Nikon speedlight as a slave for a bit more punch - should be interesting.

Thanks Dave, John and Christina. The green of the herbs comes alive in Velvia, as well as the more obvious yellows of the bananas.

The porters in this market have recently been issued with a new uniform. Previously it was a matt green but the yellow jump suits really pop as well - this is why I generally convert to monochrome and filter in post processing - in a busy setting like this bright colours in the corner of the image really detract from the subject/focal point in the image.

I was bracketing as I was shooting on this little lunchtime walkabout, but not aperture or exposure bracketing - instead I was using Film Emulation bracketing, shooting in Provia, Velvia and Black and White with a yellow filter. When scrolling though images you can easily see where colour detracts from a monochrome version of the image.

Nice series Phil. The colours really pop. No.3 gets my vote on composition alone. Perhaps the porter on the LH edge is a bit distracting but the arrangement of the three figures pull you in.
