OnOne Perfect Photo Suite 8 has arrived

I purchased the OnOne Perfect Photo Suite 7.5 earlier this month at the discounted price of $150 U.S. Dollars for owners of the Nikoogle (Google NIK) Software.

OnOne promised that I would receive the updated 8.0 version as soon as it was released. Lo-and-behold, last night, I received an email with a link to uploading the 8.0 version. The 8.0 version along with some extra goodies was uploaded without a hitch. The program even asked me if I wanted to keep the 7.5 version, which I opted to do.

IMO, this is a far more professional way to update/upgrade a program than the Nikoogle adding an extra facet to their program set unbeknownst to the users of Nikoogle. That caused me (and a lot of other folks) some heartburn.

Do I like the 8.0 version better than the 7.5 version? I cannot really say. I have been so busy with dog related activities that I haven't been able to work with either program all that much...

Did I, as a Nikoogle user need the OnOne software? Need is a pretty strong term... Want is a better explanation! I originally intended to purchase the Genuine Fractals program for resizing images, which for a long while was the standard of the industry. Genuine Fractals was purchased by OnOne and offered as Perfect Resize. Perfect Resize could be purchased individually or as part of the OnOne Perfect Photo Suite. Since the price differential was not all that great between the individual module and the Suite, I purchased the Suite.

Did I need Nikoogle? The above answer is the same. However, now that I have the program, I have fallen in love with it and do a greater portion of my image editing using Nikoogle as a Photoshop plug-in....

I had planned on attending a Scott Kelby presentation here in San Diego in December. The price of that presentation was $90 USD. I opted not to attend the presentation but, instead to put the money towards the purchase of the Perfect Photo Suite. Now if, I only can find time to work with it. My wife and I are busier working with Maltese Rescue California than we ever were when both of us worked at full-time paying jobs. At least then, we had our evenings, weekends and holidays free.

Just wonder if anyone else is using onOne software and if so how do they like it? Anyone able to compare onOne to Photoshop?

I have had onOne for a while but tended to use PS more (even though it was only cs3). I have been playing with onOne 8 since it was released several days ago and I am impressed with the changes. Basically it offers a bundle of presets for all its functions -- which can be ok as a starting point -- but now it offers much more control for the user to adjust those presets to personal taste.

The perfect brush function (eg for masking) is amazing -- although I don't know what the PS equivalent is like.

The one thing that is notably missing is noise control. Having said that though, onOne cannot be considered as a substitute for PS.

For interest was there something specific that you wanted it for? I recently came across the acronym GAS - gear acquisition syndrome. I suspect I may suffer from sas - software acquisition syndrome

going out on a limb that your reply is directed at my post, if not oh well. I am using Lightroom for organizing and editing my photos. The editor is limiting for instants it doesn't doesn't have a function for layering or HDR. Seems most photographers doing post editing are using Photoshop. The rub is if I can get most of the functionality from onOne with ease of use that Photoshop hase I would lean towards buying it instead of Photoshop. OnOne software is about a third the price of Photoshop. Can't determine if either has HDR capability so I may still have to buy an additional piece of software.

onOne does HDR ie like everything else that it does, it has presets which you can adjust to personal preferences.

I participated in the onOne PPS 8 Beta 3 public beta forum. I had two concerns, supported cameras and the user interface.I had gone to the onOne website and checked their supported cameras page which states that all onOne software supports the listed cameras. My camera was listed. I asked in the forum what they meant by supported because my raw files opened without lens correction, and I have six other apps that open my raw files and correct the lens distortion which is what I consider "support". They asked me to send them a file. They agreed that it was a problem and created an escalated ticket.
The Ui I consider to be unusable for my aging eyes. Grey on black, and light grey on medium grey may be "modern', but it is unreadable and stupid. Black on white has been around for 600 years, what is wrong with it?
The forum general discussion was captured by two spammers and is now useless, so I never received any comments there.

onOne eventually replied that they use OS X to open raw, and that Apple had dropped support for my camera. That explanation is ridiculous. Why would Apple drop support for a camera?
