    Getting Down Low and Dirty

There is a small waterfall (Slaughter Falls) in a forest area near where I live which normally doesn't have a lot of water flowing over it. But we had some solid rain most of Sat morning and after it cleared in the afternoon I paid the falls a visit. I wanted to try getting down low for shooting, something I haven't done enough of in the past.

Here is what I came up with. Comments welcome.

    17mm, ISO 100, f/14 SS 2sec, tripod

Well done Dave. It looks like you could spend quite a bit of time at this site as it appears that there are multiple possibilities in this.

Great job!!!! I really really like this!!!! What a greate perspective!

Maybe it is my astigmatism, but could it use a bit of a clockwise rotation?

Thanks for your comments Jon. Yes there are some more possibilities in this area and I do intend to return.

Many thanks for your comments Marie. I can't really tell whether it is truly horizontal or not - there is no reference in the shot to go by !

Surface of the water looks to be just about horizontal. Great shot Dave. Just a bit more interesting than your average waterfall. I like the flow lines on the surface of the FG water. Perhaps a bit over saturated for me but that's purely personal taste. Good capture

    I like it Dave,

Especially the streaks of bubbles wending their way around the rocks on the left.

Marie may be correct - but I do also have astigmatism

Do you have a hot shoe level? (or one on the tripod)

I find the former invaluable when shooting WA or UWA, as I'm often handheld, but even if not, my 'pod doesn't have a level on it.

If you say it was level, I'll believe you (and recalibrate my eyes)

    Cheers,

    Thanks John

I did push the saturation a bit because the Australian bush can be a bit dull in colour. Maybe I should back off the greens a bit.

Thanks Dave. No I don't have a hot shoe level but maybe I should. My tripod has a level but just getting that right doesn't mean the head adjustment is level.

I had a closer look at the image, in particular where the central fall area meets the water pool at the bottom of the rocks, and going by that. it is not quite level. I've adjusted that 1.8 deg CCW to get that area level, but this is opposite to what Marie suggested. Now I'm not sure ! You can judge !

Dave, very nice. The low angle really makes a difference. Great job.

Re: Getting Down Low and Dirty

I don't know if I have an eye problem or not but the top half of the photo doesn't match up with the pool and needs about a two degree left rotation. The upsetting aspect are the two streams of water from the top rock. The pool looks perfectly level but I suspect an optical illusion of the water falls .... my two cents worth

The photo backs up my thought that one doesn' need to travel to find lovely things in ones own backyard when we compare this with Colin's stream I assume taken in NZ.

EDIT unfortunately with your edit Dave you have made the pool slope off to the left
Here I eventually managed to rotate the top part without touching the bottom
