Here,in Romania,Bucharest was named Little Paris,in Bulgaria,Sofia has the same "stage name". That is not an East European illness. In Alsace there is a "Little France" and several "Little Venice". This is Wissembourg Little Venice.

Indifferent, tall, red and Gothic, robbed and transformed into the fodder storage by French Revolution, the cathedral St Paul and Peter survives from 13th c.

Although the second largest cathedral from Alsace-after that from Strasbourg- it is now a parish church only. Its revenge is hidden inside.

Because I arrived to discuss about this Romanesque tower,it would say that in Alsace there are more than twenty Romanesque churches from Wissembourg, where is only this rest,to south Alsace,at Feldbach. That means a distance around 130 miles-on roads of course. In the south of Alsace there is a village or a small town which has a beautiful German name- Ottmarsheim. Here a Roman church is from 11th c.

The sides of this architecture's "vrai beaute", in Carolingian style, are divisible by three as Saint Trinity's homage.

The number eight has a great importance in the Bible so the octagonal shape of the main building follows the tradition.

With flowers it tries to attenuate the severity of the interior.

Initially it was a nunnery. The troubles begun with French revolution when it was transformed in a parish church.A "few light" appears in 20th c.when it was electrified(around 1950). Then... in 20th c.,again, "more light" appeared... when a fire destroyed the organ and several paintings(1991). A hard work followed to bring it in a good condition.

The time to return at Wissembourg is coming without to speak,of course, about all beauties are here.I remind a hydro- power plant with its reservoir which is a part of a chain of hydro-power plants.

Returning to Wissembourg means returning to St Peter and Paul Church to see what professionals said to be the most beautiful Gothic cloister from the entire Rhine valley. It was built on the north side of the church, being never used.

Getting inside, the visitor will admire the largest fresco from entire France-Saint Christophe with Jesus as child (36 feet high)-. That is "the revenge" about which I said before.

It is partially accepted that in 7th c. Pope Vitalianus introduced the organ in worship service. The spread of the organ was slow so late in 13th c it appeared at Strasbourg Cathedral. Here at Wissembourg it can admire an organ from 18th c.,recently restored.
