Firstly, welcome to CiC. The one thing I will say about these two images is that the backgrounds do not compliment the gorgeous dog.

Is Teddy a Samoyed? Very handsome. Let me compliment you. You have done a nice job with your focus - it seems that you are spot on Teddy's eyes.

What do you use to edit your pictures with? Just curious as to what your post processing capabilities will be.

Kapil - it looks like you have a beautiful dog. Is there any particular reason that you decided to shoot in B&W rather than colour?

I find the same thing a Grahame, you've paid attention to getting a good shot of your dog, and have ignored the background and things have gotten into the shot that take away from it. The pail and tap in the top image and the food dish in the bottom, draw the viewer's attention away from the subject.

You can lessen the effect of something in the background by shooting with a shallower depth of field (DoF). You are shooting stopped down (f/25 in the first image and f/32 in the second) and this is not helping to solve this issue. I rarely shoot with an aperture that is lower than f/11, and in fact much of my work is done with the lens wide open or perhaps a stop or two down). Doing so would let you drop your ISO setting closer to 200, while maintaining a decent shutter speed.

For these types of shots, I tend to use aperture priority (the metadata shows that you are shooting shutter priority) so as to get a specific DoF impact. I will focus on the eye closest to the camera, because as long as it is sharp, your image will look good.

Thanks... no editing per se... just converted to monochrome.... I have not yet started post processing.... started photography 3 weeks back... thanks for the help...

Thanks Manfred..... I thought b/w photo renders a classic touch.... no other reason. . I used shutter priority as teddy is hyperactive.. moves tooo fast.... but will try aperture priority next time.... thanks a ton....
