    Bugs in my Palms

These guys were hanging out on a seed spray that had fallen off a palm in the high winds and had no objection coming indoors for a session.

Not easy lighting these with their shiny smooth backs. Processed differently from my norm in that I applied the Nikon 'Neutral' profile in ViewNX and also put through 'Neat' to remove any noise and sharpen.

Comments and suggestions welcome as always.

Great images Graham!!! I love the light on the shell especially!! #1 my fave, I could almost feel the texture on that exoskeleton on the first one. Good job.

Very nice. "Neat" seems to have been very successful for these.

#1 for me, lighting, sharpness and most especially, the angle. All work well, great image(s).

John, David, Claudio, Mark, Jack, Izzie, Nandakumar and Binnur,

Thank you guys for commenting on these couple of shots.

I'm pleased to hear that No 1 is preferred as it's the one that was most troublesome with the reflective surface, finally solved by getting the balance between flash power and kitchen roll supplementary diffuser right. One reason I enjoy shooting these small critters is to be able the see the intricate patterns and rich colours that we (or at least me) so often do not notice.

I like the first shot, too Grahame. You did a great job with the lighting on that shell. I also like the second one for the smiley face. The bug seems to like you

Thanks Greg, I can see me doing a few more of these now I know where to find them easily and good subjects for practising lighting methods.

It's always a pleasure to view your bug images simply because you photograph them so beautifully. I prefer the first image for the amazing detail and sharpness, and the "eyes" BUT I love the position of the bug (towards me) in the second image.

Gorgeous critter, and I wish I had a few in my house.

    Hi Christina,

Thanks for the compliment. Just for you I have done another session with the 2nd type bug, not quite so good looking really close up but will post tomorrow as worn out chasing it around tonight
