Landscape/From a day in the woods

I uploaded the SOOC and the edited versions of a landscape.. As you can see SOOC is very dull and colorless. I tried to bring the colours back with ACR and PS CC, but I'm very new into it and I don't know how to use complicated techniques yet. I would like to have your opinions about PP and composition both

Thank you David. This is what I suspected. While uploading the image, I said to myself 'I think I have done too much' So,it will take some time to control the borders in PP

Agreed with the others, although it looks better still. I personally would like to see the clouds whiter, make them "pop".

I have to agree that it does look a bit overcooked but I would certainly like to know how you pulled that blue out of the sky?

Binnur, one of the things I did shortly after venturing into the editing learning curve was to set myself a size/resolution target, basically my aim was that every worked on and edited image would have to be capable of being displayed at a 1200px width of acceptable technical IQ to myself. Very simply, if it could not be displayed at 1200 px without obvious artefacts or mush caused by editing it was not acceptable.

Grahame, for the edit, I made some adjustments like WB, contrast,highlights (down to zero),vibrance , clarity ,sharpness in ACR and in addition I increased saturation for blue color in HSL/ Grayscale part of ACR . In photoshop part, I flattened the layers before saving as PSD ,this was a mistake and lesson was learnt but I don't have a file with layers now But as far as remember, I might have created a selective colour adjustment layer and a hue and saturation layer to make the colours stronger. (BTW decreasing highlights to zero improves sky, I watched it in one of Scott Kelby's videos )

Thanks also for your advice about size target . I actually made a decision about it just a couple of days ago,because I thought that I needed a standart. The edited image is 1000 px wide, I have chosen this size because it fits well with laptop screens too. The images I uploaded in CIC before were smaller, but then I had to resize again for e-mailing my images to my friends. In the end I decided to downsize my images to 1000 px wide so that it fits for every occasion and I don't have to resize them again and again. A size standart is also necessary for the reasons you mentioned in your post. Do you think 1000 px is good enough?

Binnur - It looks like you are making good progress. As you (and others) have said, it's a bit overdone, but peeling back the saturation a bit is quite easy. The important lesson is the amount of data that is available in the RAW file that you can coax out in post-processing.

Something I sometimes do is to put the original and post-processed file together as stacked layers (the processed file on top is my preference) and then change the opacity and blending mode of the layer to see how that affects the look. Often I get something I quite like that way.

Thank you Manfred Actually the members of CIC and my photoshop book are helping me a lot. I think I might have to study 'layers' part of the book again after finishing the book just to digest it thoroughly. I will try your suggestion about putting the original and PPed files as stacked layers for some images in my computer as a learning practise.

I'm uploading a re-edit. I popped up the clouds and changed the blue a bit. IMO it is still a very colourful photo but for the time being learning techniques is more important for me. I can improve my edits by practising in time if I can learn the techniques properly.

This edit looks much better, Binnur, although the shadows in the clouds still seem to have a touch of cyan in them. One thing I have found with ACR is to use the Vibrance slider very sparingly, if at all. It can really screw colours up very quickly.

And this is another edit according to Manfred's suggestion. I blended the file edited in ACR with the finished more saturated file in PS, the blending mode was normal and opacity %50 .I think the result looks more natural now. IMO 'layers' function is just magic, it helps a lot and you can make so many changes to your taste

Looks more natural Binnur. Just to add to what Greg said about the Vibrance slider; I tend to use it and the Clarity slider in virtually all of my RAW conversions (settings between 25 and 50; heavier on the landscape side and lighter on the portrait side).

I like your edit; only thing i feel needs be corrected is the blue tint and blue shade on the clouds; barring that you have done really well
