Yup, been there, done that, but you know Haseeb, this is still a very interesting image to view. It has kind of a mysterious mood to it even though it is a bright sun image. I like it!

Ok, as I'm a complete novice and new to using a dslr can someone tell me why this happened? Was it caused by going outside into the heat from an a/c room?

That's one possibility. Others might be fully depressing the shutter before focus was achieved or having the camera or lens in manual focus mode.

I don't know the camera but I can set my Nikons to release the shutter when I press the button regardless of whether the camera thinks something is in focus or not.

It's hard to tell from a single image even an attractive one.
