    Butterfly (first attempt)

    This is my first attempt at Butterfly's,which i found very difficult every time i got close,they kept flying away C&C Welcome!

    Yes they can be very difficult to approach, particularly at this time of the year, which is why I tend to use a large lens for them.

    Later on, after they have finished mating etc and are getting a bit well fed and lazy they are often easier to approach.

    I haven't seen any of these Meadow Browns yet this year.

    I think these are excellent. I'd be interested to know your reasoning as far as your exposure settings... particularly the f14.

    Exactly the same settings which I use for similar subjects.

    1/200 in case the insect moves, or there is a fraction of wind movement. F14 as a handy compromise to give more focus depth while remaining sharp. I vary between F11 and F16 but find F14 is a good middle ground. And Iso 200 is just a little 'faster' than 100 but still doesn't increase any noise. Sometimes I go up to 400 if necessary.

    Extremely good first attempt David, well done. These are some of the best ones I've seen here for a while, good compositions, nice complimentary backgrounds and sharp !
