    Loneliness in depression. C&C Welcome

Hi, going forward on my photography venture I stopped and clicked another shot. Can you please review it and let me know what exactly is missing for it to make it much better?

I have been on photography break due to some health issues n recovering well. With that time i tried to understand the use of off cam flash n bought some setup for it.

In this image i tried to show the emotion of Loneliness in depression or Loneliness and depression where a human is left alone n he adopted liquor. It is a selfie and shot with 10 seconds timer using flash with softbox n boomstand in my room.

I'm confused with b&w version and split toning version.

Please provide your views and suggestion with composition and processing.

    Thank You

PS : Please click on the image for lightbox screen view (Highly recommended).

    Hi Raj,

The liquor element is easily visible, the human subject is a bit vague and could represent numerous other entities. I think a slightly more refined subject, however not totally revealing, would add immensely to this image. However, as it stands, the title, liquor bottles reveal enough to convey imagery of depression and loneliness.

Shooting a staged shot lacks the gut wrenching reality of the real thing...a homeless alcoholic
drinking from a glass...never happen. Might suggest that a study of the subjects is called for.
It is OK from a photographic point of view.

    Chauncey,

    Some big assumptions there....

Is it a glass or second, broken bottle?

    Who said homeless?

Who is to say the photographer is not the depressed subject and that is why there are health issues?

A touch more definition on the human figure is I guess the only comment I would make.

Thanks Raj, either way, for sharing these pictures with us.

    Hi Raj,

Yes, adjusting the tones would help. Also, sometimes the eyes show more despair than body language.

I have raised the tones and reduced the opacity of the grains.

That would serve you well Raj but, I must confess that it would be overly depressing from a personal point of view. Good luck my friend.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion. I would really appreciate if you can share some good resources for it. I'm mentally way too strong to handle such studies as i had been into a lot of big trouble in my life and it already made me stronger.

    Hi,

I think the idea was good. But it is too dark, it's hard to see the subject, I didn't get a clear view of what's or who's there.

    Raj,

First thing that came to my mind when I saw this is a song by Kenny Rogers called “Somebody Nobody Knows”.

The idea is very good and the execution works very well. The grain in the image enhances the mood and the monochrome makes it authentic.

My 2c worth: I would like the figure to be faceless with the right arm stretched out a little with the bottle clutched in the right hand.

A soul in the shadows of a city where nobody cares.

The last edit seems better. For the first time, I see a hint of a man lying down and holding his head. The highlight on his back leg shows that this is a person lying down. I'm thinking that maybe increasing the overall highlight and middle tone may improve the image. Just my two cents here :-) Cheers.
