According to Murphy's Law, David, no matter how good the photography or how many shots are taken, you will never have the correct angle for an identification.
So my question is; are the sternites (underside of the abdomen) bright black or dull grey?
I'm thinking about Neomochtherus pallipes. But a very rare migrant to the UK south coast. Widely found in Southern Europe though.

Hi Geoff, just had a look through my images and would you believe no belly shots
, but what i can guess is that they were defo not bright black, it looks like the belly colour is not far away from its side colour!

Love those David, I never cease to be amazed at the beauty of insects that you dont see with the naked eye - especially insects we are normally adverse to getting close to ! Wonderful shots and as commented those eyes, wow!
