A dragon fly of some type

Took several shots but to close to focus properly on some. 300mm m 4/3. The joys of electronic view finders.

Several species about but only these settled and only on the ground. Some of this type were a lot bigger but just kept flying around..

This is only the 2nd one I have managed to get a shot of this year.

Looks like a male Common Darter to me.

They have a habit of perching on bare ground. And from my experience, they seem to choose very pale ground so it becomes difficult to correctly expose for the wing veins.

Getting fairly common at this time of the year. Females are similar but have an all brown abdomen.

yup - was going to say the same little beggers to photo on the ground - often walking towards them makes them move on to a slightly higher perch

    Thanks all.

All they did if they moved was fly to another patch of the same ground. Much easier to approach from behind but this one stayed there until I tried to get the camera low down on the ground. None of them would have that.

What would happen if you turn the image around? Will it be easier to look at it with the head up instead of head down? Are you game to indulge t'is little old lady? me?

Embarrassing to post it that way round Izzie. I don't think it suits it at all.

I probably do have one taken from the back and the perspective would be totally different.

Frustrating isn't it, particularly when you are surrounded by bulrushes and your just dying for that classic shot. Seem to be a lot around here this year. Nice capture all the same.

Thanks Jeremy. There were some much larger ones about with a similar look in the air. I may revisit the place soon if the weather holds and hope some settle. There were also some blue/black bodied ones that I don't think were damsels. Way too big.
