    Spider Kite

What I liked about this image was the whimsey, the diagonal lines and the colors of the web. I shot F22, hoping to capture the sparkle and hint of movement in the web as evidenced by its shape. I also liked the warm tones.

Why I sat on this before I posted. I wondered about the burned out sun areas. I wondered if that was a fatal flaw. Yet, when I shot this web against the greenery alone, it lost its punch.

Ok. What say you? (Kodiak, please be kind)

    Hi Marie,

    Your last line should read:
"Please be kind, no negative comments and no bad critiques" and see
where and what this will bring you! I mentor 4 photo clubs in Europe
and I am known to be hard but fair. That said, you came in front of the
bear and said: "…do what you want but don't hurt me." …really?

The Spider Kite… What say you?

I say that you have taken a lot of risks to get that shot. A shot where so
many things could have gone wrong. How can I show kindness toward
the bold attitude of someone who…
    • purposely shoots against daylight
    • dares to ignore the extreme ratio between highlights and low keys within
    the same frame
    • thinks to find an advantage shooting in manual mode
    • closes down the aperture to a strangling ƒ22
    • cranks up the ISO to an admittedly rash 1250
    • hopes to get away with it… posting such result and begging for mercy!!!

No way, you will get no kindness from me but admiration! So many things
could have gone wrong but you did everything right! Congrats.

As a bonus, the architect is waiting patiently for breakfast on the morning
light. Good work Marie, thank you!

Marie, I wouldn't have considered all the difficulties that Kodiak mentioned you had to overcome to get this shot, but it is wonderful capture.

This image should be viewed at full size in lytebox to fully appreciate it.

Hi Marie, the web looks sharp and clear and I like the blurred BG. May be getting some green instead of blown out parts by cloning at the top part of the frame would help

I consider you did extremely well Marie and have produced an image of quality and interest that many would have not attempted because the books tell you not to do it.

Marie posted a fairly large jpg of the web. This could prove an advantage to you
should you try your hand at it and show your result!

    Dear Kodiak,

Okay, I can breathe now. I knew, no matter what, that you would speak your mind, I was just hoping that your commentary would not be damning. I love working with light, and I always shoot in Manual mode. I have found that the dew reflected on the spiderwebs, at just the right angle of refraction, is prismatic. But, you have to get it just so. It reflects all the colors of the rainbow. I got some lovely pictures by accident a few years back. I was able to reproduce it once, but only slightly since then. That was what I was actually after.

Binnur, if you wish to edit my image, please feel free to do so.

Do I have such a bad reputation?

Not at all. I have all the most respect for you. That is why your commentary was so important to me.

Beautifully stunning Marie! I love the capture and how you've framed it.

This is the type of scene with which that I would seriously work the viewing angles and choose the best for display. But then, that might have been exactly what you did!

Very appealing imaged, Marie. I've never kept an image of a spider web because I've never made one remotely close to this good.

I've tried doing that with images such as this. The problem is that if you choose just a slightly different angle, you so easily lose the definition of the web created by the back lighting. This type of image is extraordinarily difficult to make as good as this one is. That's not to say that with the right luck, patience and perseverance, a better image can't be made. Instead, it just shows how difficult this genre is.

    Dear Frank,

I did seriously work all angles. If you like, I can post some of the rejects so you could see some of my process?

Mike, thank you. I do struggle. I see something in my head and try to make it so through the digital image. Most often, I am not successful. LOLs.

Hey Caddy, (you should fill in your profile!)

Donno! I suppose its a crazy blend of taking photography very seriously as
much as not taking me too seriously… or I'm taking quite seriously the pleasure
I have doing it… I think that, altogether, I'm taking my fun very seriously?

Does that make any sense to you?

Hi Marie Sorry for being a bit late. There have been a lot of talks here while I was asleep. This is what usually happens because of the time difference between countries Now it is early in the morning here. First let me walk my dog , have my breakfast and do my shopping so that I can come back to my laptop to show you an edit. I actually downloaded your image last night and tried a little and quick cloning to see how it worked already before commenting (this is what I usually do while making comments on images , because sometimes what you have in mind doesn't have the same effect when you try it on the image) and it didn't seem bad to me to get rid of some blown parts in the photo, especially on the top right corner. I will post an edit in the afternoon. Thanks for letting me edit your image.

I don't do any comments or edits in CinC in order to prove an advantage to myself. I follow the threads , make comments , sometimes make edits and ask questions to improve myself. Thanks to members in CinC who have helped me a lot since I joined CinC and thanks to them because they have never been rude and they have never made discouraging comments about my uploaded images or my comments. What I like about CinC is that people usually don't see themselves as the God of Photography here and they usually don't mention their success in photography to show off. I have actually found out their success in time by looking at their own websites and following their good comments. That's why I respect them. Modesty and kindness always come first for me.

Daniel (Kodiak) -- I think Marie has set a standard to your level and respect you for it that is why she was apprehensive at first until she sees your comments. We must thank the big man above for letting her live this long without breathing just waiting for your post.

Anyway, Marie -- it was a perfect shot! No need to worry at all. I've had some fairly good shots of a web but not as good as this one. I am just wondering...why did you let that spider hang on the side without taking a photo of it too? 'Reminds me of an advert on tv (Pepsi) where the baby was doing all these tricks to be noticed but parents were busy drooling over their soda instead... Maybe the spider was doing the same telling you "I am here...I am here...take my photo too!!!"

Apparently, we are the only two who noticed the architect!
