I've never tried seam carving before so as this one is extreme it's interesting to try using it. It was carved 6 times and some of the water detail has been lost in places each time mostly on the last 4. Not sure about colour balance so just used the whites and then warmed it a little.




I had to clone out an artefact top right and left some evidence. Used a pick up point that was too close.

I carved horizontally and vertically as separate operations. Now I know the final size I might try again and see what happens when all are done at once.

It's sometimes called liquid rescaling. The one I used works by marking the parts that need to be retained. The image size is then reduced leaving these parts alone and the "seams" are blended. It's also possible to mark the parts that aren't needed.

As an example if you take the image I posted I could reduce the height more but not the width. I kept the aspect ratio more or less as it was.

When I have time I will try carving it in one go. There seems to be a need for a sort of dummy run to see what reduction is possible so I did this one width 1st and then height, 3 times.

This is the result carving it in one go. I've left the artefact top right alone.



The artefact seems to be caused by the no ripples by the birds but plenty in the top right corner of the original but apart from that the blending is pretty good.



The general pp is a bit different on this one. Only have so much time available.

An interesting technique I have not heard of before John but unfortunately the attempt to increase the size of the birds has simply reduced the IQ level that was not good to start with.

I suppose technically there will be an angle, focal length and aperture that will achieve max size and acceptable DoF of these four pairs of posts and at the time having a bird on each with the right light and wind conditions

I'm off to have a go at some rugby images.

When you get a lens that does much better than the one you used for the shot I have a feeling you wont notice much difference when they look this size in a 100% resolution crop.

I'm familiar with car tires in trees and you have my sincere empathy.

Thank you Christina. Fortunately all I had to do was walk along a path by the sea wall to compose them.

The location is close to the tree I photographed with the boat for 'Blue Morning' and previous pre sunrise shots and on looking at that tree yesterday someone has thrown two car tyres up into it and they are hanging off branches, I was fuming
