FALL magic in New England - C&C welcomed

Missed taking pictures this week thanks to a crazy week at work... so took a walk in the woods/swamp tonight before dark (happiness is)...

    #1 - oh how I love how the light plays with the forest -- 800ISO; 20m; F8; 1/80

    Hi Kym

I like the first shot in particular very much. I am a bit of a sucker for shots like this but some work and some don't. Yours works very well IMO.

Nice job with #1, Kim. I had a similar work week and an all too brief walk in the woods, but I am quite sure I didn't catch the light half so well as you.

Thank you Janis. Sounds like we are both happy for the weekend to be here - enjoy it!

I like #1 too but I prefer #2 better for my taste...it shows me of the changing of colours of autumn. I would have preferred to have enough room at the top to show more of the sky but the colours are amazing to ignore.

As days pass, keep an eye on the carpet of leaves. As leaves fall, they open
the tree top to light and sometime there are enough fallen to cover the ground
and a short and magic balance make the woods look enchanted!

Nicely captured, I would have taken the exact same shot (1st one) as I like the dabbled lighting effect on greenery.

Thank you Izzie. I had more of the sky in, but I thought it took away from the image, so I cropped it back.

Great colours in these Kim and for me it's No 1 ! Well composed and the light through the trees makes it.

I like them both. You captured nice lighting. I think your original framing of the second is better. It's a featureless sky, so adding more of it doesn't add much of interest, and your second version puts the shoreline smack dab in the center, which makes it less interesting.

I think the first is underexposed:

I assume you did this so that the sky would not be blown out, but the result looks dark to me, and it obscures details in the woods. Just my taste.

Thanks for your comments Dan. I agree, the second pic is better without the sky...one of my reasons for cropping it. I just put the 3rd in to show Izzie.

I underexposed the 1st one on purpose. You are correct, I didn't want the sky to blow out, and...I wanted to replicate what I saw at that moment... It was getting dark, and the light was dancing all over the place :-)

    Hi Kim,

As you can see from the histogram, the dynamic range of the scene is rather low and you could have upped the exposure a fair bit without any danger of blowing the highlights. One reason why it is a good idea to check the histogram in your camera after the shot.

If you had blown the highlights a little, there isn't any important detail there, and Lightroom would have recovered the highlights quite easily.

Thanks for the additional information and tip Dave. I need to find the histogram in my camera - my weekend homework.
