What Winter subjects do you have in mind?

Just to keep me motivated, I tend to select a couple of target subject for the period ahead. Not to pursue exclusively but to provide something to focus on (pun intended). Now that Summer is over and we are entering the dark side, what subjects do you have in mind?

When this came up at the beginning of this year I think I said Landscape (sort of managed a few) and Natural history. I think I'm going to move towards Architecture/Cityscapes/Street photography and perhaps some table top to learn something about lighting.

My makeshift studio has one door that opens to the outside. I'm hoping for a few really cold days with natural ice formations that I can photograph without it melting. I'm also hoping there is not so much ice that it accumulates on the streets and sidewalks, as that's the only weather I dislike.

I would also like to capture a nice landscape scene with snow.

After 10 years in the Middle East I'm looking forward to some proper winter weather! There's only so much 25-30c Christmas heat you can take

So I'm going to enjoy some street photography in wet and blustery weather with all that it implies - puddles, buses splashing passers by, umbrellas inside out, watery reflections on windows, that kind of thing.

With the clocks going back low light and night shots in London should be on the cards if I'm in the city with business - and if I can be bothered to carry a tripod with me.

Bring on the dark side. Crisp dark side with clear skies preferably, rather than the usual 6 months of grey and drizzle that I remember so fondly.

Welcome back Phil. I was wondering if you were back permanently.

I am looking forward to seeing your pictures in this new venue.

This is my kind of winter. The scarf is to prevent sunburn/windburn not for warmth...

Actually this was a test of my cheapie underwater and fishing camera (Fuji XP60) that I purchased used for less than $80 USD. Not great imagery but sufficient to record pictures of THE BIG ONES I hope to catch. It's great to knock around out at sea with no worries about damage from the salt water...

This is my buddy Sean. The camera would need an UWA lens to capture my big belly

I would like to experience some nice ice storms again just to photograph...I've had a good time about 4 or 5 years ago -- everything seems to be "shining"...when my neighbours see me with my camera they'd invite me in for a cuppa like as if my house is not behind me...

Look for rain followed by freezing temperatures, ice coated trees and buildings are fun to photograph.

I love freezing rain also, especially the day after when the sun hits it!

Point it towards the sky, this being star cluster and galaxy season.

Actually, I plan (during late December) to shoot the San Diego Skyline from across the bay. Our shortest days happen in mid to late December so many of the offices in the buildings are open for business at the golden hour and right after sunset. The result is that many if not most of the windows in the high rise buildings downtown are lit up making the general scene more attractive.

The addition of the pretty Christmas lights would help make this a festive scene but, will restrict the use of the image to a Christmas oriented posting. I plan to also shoot the skyline after the Christmas decorations are removed (sometime in January) which will give me a year-round flavor for the photos.

Ah, lovely San Diego where we have climate instead of seasons.

    For me, winter means birds.

    Taken: December 23, 2013.

I'll be hitting the trails with the 50D and 400/5.6L looking for the feathered ones, for sure. But, if I wimp out, I'm also planning on hitting the new central public library downtown with my spherical pano gear. Richard, if you haven't been, it's well worth a visit.

This winter I would like to get up and into Manfred country, that is the City of Ottawa, to do a little night light shooting.

    Cheers: Allan
