    Autumn Into Winter

We had an early snow recently, and it occurred to me that the leaves weren't even fully off as yet. So my theme for the day was to capture scenes, especially trees, that demonstrated the merging of the seasons with snow and residual color. Your thoughts and suggestions always appreciated. Absolutely gorgeous! My favourite is #2 for the unique composition, and #1 for the sheer beauty and misty feel.

Wow, Kevin... wonderfully successful to my eye. I think you captured the ambience you sought very well. Some strengths I see are the appeal of the centered sun over the tree in the first, the composition of the second, the colors in the third. In the first three especially, you succeed in using the light attenuation the falling snow to convey depth in a very appealing manner.

Nicely captured, frozen branches always make a good subject.

    Very nice series.

I live just south of Columbus and is was a very pretty snow. Hoped to get some shots after work but the wind had picked up and blew a lot of the snow off the trees by the time I got home.

]Thanks all, for the kind words- glad you liked them.

Mark: As you seem to realize, shooting in the falling snow can be a blessing and a real hindrance at the same time: a little too much and it really obscures everything and spots the lense unmercifully; when just right it makes for a nice diffusion and softening.

Ziggy: The wind was really starting to pick up so I had to go out a bit earlier than I wanted to get the snow on the boughs before the wind blew it off, and it was awfully dark. but it did allow me the shot with the sun just over the tree, though.

Thanks, Christina. Those were my favorites as well. It wasn't a day to attempt anything with any real sharpness, so I went with a softer, more ethereal look.

Hi, Kevin. Good having you back! Great series. I just arrived home, from a beach under a blue sky and a temperature of 35ºC, so, your images were quite shocking to me!

They are all nice but #2 is striking. Very nice textures. Cheers,

These are all great Kevin. I like #1 for the added interest provided by the sun. I also like #3 for the fantastic sense of depth provided by the juxtaposition of cattails against the background flatness created by the snow in the distance. The stream adds a sense of gentle horizontal movement against the falling snow.

Just lovely, Kevin. I think my favourite may be #4. I notice the colour temperature varies among the images. I don't dislike the effect, but am wondering whether you or the camera chose the WB.

Very well done. I like the one with the cattails best perhaps, it's very well composed.

    Hi Kevin

These are all really nice. Like Otavio, we have somewhat different weather here and it is refreshing to say the least to see shots like this. Your idea worked very well I think and I find #2 quite exceptional.

So good to hear from you all! I appreciate you taking the time to have a look and comment.

Janis: good eye. I had played with all of them, and considered a sepia effect on the large tree, #4, so I suspect I've fiddled with the temp on each of these, thoough I'd have to check. There was a surprising amount of magenta in that morning's light that was giving a purplish cast to the snow that I chose to remove.

It is interesting that you commented on that particular color in snow. Thomas Kincade used that color fairly commonly in snow in his oil paintings. In fact, I don't believe he ever did a snow scene where the snow was actually even close to being white. For example, take a look at his rendition of The Christmas Cottage.

    Re: Autumn Into Winter

Interesting observation and excellent memory on your part. I've done a fair number of snow scenes and not noticed the magenta before, so it may not be typical, but apparently is something Kincade appreciated. Thanks for the head's up- very interesting.

They are all very good, Kevin, but the first is my favourite of the set. I think you have achieved a marvellous depth of field in the tree itself.

Wonderful series. It's No 2 followed very closely by No 3 for me but that could also be reversed.

Typical outstanding images. #2 is by far the best for me, it has a magical mood which is enhanced by the excellent comp. #3 is great, too, for the mood / feeling of being there.
