    First orchid from the season

A homegrown Cymbidium. First one to flower this season, more to come normally.

Lighted by one speedlight, bounced off the ceiling.

Not sure iff my lightning is ok. What about background ?
Other issues I should take care off ?
    All C&C welcomed.

Well captured Rudi, and with an appropriately complementary background.

Am I such a hide bound traditionalist that I might have also enjoyed seeing these lovelies on a black background?

    Sigh. I guess so.

All the same, you have done a wonderful job with this image. The umber? copper? What color would you call the BG? is a lovely complement.

    Nice job.

My favourite orchid, Rudi...nothing to nit about -- the colour, the flower, the background are all matching together. I like the fact that you chose this sort of colour for the background as it complements the flower very nicely. And welcome back -- missed your posts.

The lighting is excellent. Compositionally perhaps a bit more room on the right would be nice. The BG color is a matter of taste. Some of us like matching colors, some of us prefer contrast. I'm among the latter for the most part so would have preferred black or grey. If matching desired I'd go with some version of green.

Thanks all for the comments, the remarks, the nice words..... as Always really appreciated.

As for background. Sometimes I like a black BG, sometimes I don't. This time I could not made up my mind
I must admit that the printed version looks better with a black BG, at least to my opinion....
For those who wondered how it looks on a black BG.....

Thank you for humoring me on the BG.

Beautiful. The blooms really are elegant.

I would be interested in knowing what it takes to grow orchids. I have amaryllis and i was thinking of branching out.

    Thanks Rie.

First things first: The credit for growing the orchids goes to my beloved wife !! I only take pictures off them
I try to give you the short version of HER recipe for growing them....This works for her it may not work for others..
Cymbidium: From +/- mai till first frost (+/- oktober) they are outside in the garden (in pot) against a north facing wall. They get only sun early in the morning and late in the evening. Once in 14 days they get a fertilizer (1 gram off 20-20-20 fertilizer per liter water). By the end off oktober the first flower stalks may appear, depending on the variety - Our latest variety starts flowering end off januari.
Before first frost the are brought inside, in a normal heated room, anywhere there is some space left. No more fertilizer is given in wintertime (+/- from okt till febr/March).
After flowering they are moved into a cooler place, nearly no water is given till febr/march.

For Phalaenopsis, Cambria, Odontocydium, Dendrobium....: They stay indoors all year, fertilizer as with Cymbidium. Once in 14 days they are soaked in a bucket with water for abt 3 minutes, let the rest off the water beying dripped out before replacing.
In the soaking lays the tricky part. They are soaked once in 14 days IFF the pot has lost enough weight/water from the previous soaking. Iff the pot is still too heavy it only gets a little bit of water, no soaking at all. And I must say that my wife is very good at this.....

As with most things it is not that difficult, once you mastered it and a lot off dedication, persevearance is required....

    Hope this helps.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I print on Glossy paper. But I guess the colors would really 'pop' on metallic paper.
What is your experience with Metallic paper ??

Rudi...thank you for the info on taking care of orchids. Mine always managed to flower each year and cymbidium is my best favourite of all so I am getting some more other colours online after the holidays when I see them...they are easier to take care of.
