    SMC PENTAX-F 50mm f1.7

I love this lens for its older style hexagonal bokeh. Wide open it is a little hit-n-miss but at f2 it is razor sharp and I've a load of shots from it that are absolute keepers.

This one was shot wide open and shows my two boys exploring the countryside.

I was taught but anyway might have got the wrong idea that wide open lenses cause less distortion, I don't know now but normally use wide open for speed.

Thought that I would add one, out getting some practice shooting Christmas Lights, I was using my 50mm f/1.8 which I think I have never used at f/1.8 in all the time that I have had it. So Christmas Lights with a 50mm f/1.8 at 400ISO and 1/3rd s

    Cheers: Allan

Phil's rules stated that shot didn't have to be widest aperture.

And ExifToolGUI gives reported aperture as f/4.8. As I understanding some (all?) Nikon cameras can show a higher than nominal value at close distances. I could never get f/2.8 at 1:1 or so on my long-gone D50 + Nikkor macro 60mm f/2.8G, IIRC.

It's because the effective aperture at macro distances is wider than what is set and Nikon cameras show the real macro aperture not what was set on the camera. Canon don't show it or record it.

    Re: Lenses Wide Open

f1.4 on an 85mm is a bit too wide open for portraits, but here's one anyway:

I generally prefer wide open at 85mm for subject isolation while shooting further back in street photography:
