Taken from Burlington Heights, overlooking Hamilton Harbour, Ontario, Canada. Light mist over the water. f 20, 16mm, 1/15" ISO 200. Lens in Tokina 11-16mm.



The pic seems quite noisy. Don't know why. ISO is only 200.

Beautiful view though -- I love the moody blue broken by the pinkish sun and clouds. Did you shoot this with a tripod? Your SS is too low. Handheld, you need to brace yourself and use IS. I may be wrong...

Nice Pano Joe. It may be my eyes but there seems to be a water spot or something just above and left of the sun. I think I see several others in the sky as well?

Thanks Frank. Yes I did notice that spot. I will have a careful look at my kens to see if it has a rain spot or something. Not aware of others in the sky but concerned about the noise though.

Now I wish I know the answer to your question...maybe you have IS on despite the tripod? Then the image will be blurred and not noisy...hope someone can respond to this accordingly...

It does seem a lot of noise for ISO200, have you undertaken any PP work such as bring out the shadows?

Very nice shot, but yes there is quite a bit of noise.

Thanks for this comment. Yes, I had adjusted the shadows and also the contrast in Lightroom. I had also cropped out some extraneous detail. Is this the problem?

The image is slightly underexposed so noise is more visible. Try the same shot with same settings and use the camera's noise reduction process and then take another series of shots one stop and two stops exposed to the right.

I decided to google your question about noise as I was almost sleepless why this occurs even in an FF camera likes yours.....
I think I may have found an explanation to your noise dilemma here:

ISO does not have a direct relationship with noise, if you have a very dim scene with little light falling on the sensor then you will have noise regardless of the ISO setting. Read the whole exchange of info here complete with example...I am just wondering -- the post is about a year old.

Hi Joe, I've found that noise is far more prevalent than I originally thought so I now check for and adjust as appropriate for noise as one of the first steps in my workflow. That way it doesn't get accentuated later in the workflow by sharpening and other processes.

Usually it will be more noticeable in areas of low contrast, such as the sky and more so in darker than lighter areas. Depending upon your PP skills, you can limit noise reduction to low contrast areas where it is needed and limit sharpening to high contrast areas to avoid enhancing noise. One great way to apply noise reduction to just areas of low contrast is with a Luminosity Mask. One very good video on doing this is here. The video will take more than one viewing to absorb but the pertinent part you would be interested in is at the 7:45 point.

Here are some tips from Colin Southern that may help you to get a better grasp on both noise and the flip side of the coin, sharpening.

Found the tips from Colin very helpful. I don't know PS and not familiar with luminosity masks so that solution is out of reach at the present. Since I cropped about 50 % of the original, I am fairly sure that was my problem. Thanks for helping find this solution. Expose properly and avoid excessive cropping!
