I suggested Laurel and Hardy because they seemed typical to me of the difficulty of making the connection between how we see historical figures and trying to place them in some sort of modern view. I'm struggling to explain this, but often I see images of historical people and I just want to 'be there' to see what they really looked like. The image fading, the BW finish, the clothes, often make historical characters seem of a different world. I think this colouring process helps reverse some of that. Looking at this image and mentally taking away the slightly comical outfits they wore they could just be two ordinary guys on the streets of any modern city. Some might say that's taking away the magic of such characters, which in a way it is, but it also helps us to understand them.
