Butterfly season

We've had large numbers and a reasonable variety of butterflies around lately. They are mostly very flighty but occasionally they stay still for a while.

1. A dainty swallowtail. This was taken through the kitchen window and was a fair way away. Quite heavily cropped.



2. An unknown variety, early in its development



3. A different individual just before it emerged



4. The same individual a couple of hours later



5. A blue tiger

Very nice. Certainly no butterflies around here these days. I particularly like #4 because it is so unusual.

Tony...it is nearly Autumn over there maybe the heat and humidity is just right at this time of the year...I love #3 and 4 for the story it tells. I like the other ones too but #3 and #4 made up their own...I was thinking you might have done a time lapse of it...if you have a connection to a power supply nearby.

Dave, you probably see the same species as these, among others. There have been so many butterflies around that there was a special mention on the television news tonight and the moths are bothering the football players here for the Asia Cup.

Izzie, it does not feel like Autumn yet - still quite hot and rainy for the last few weeks. I don't know whether I have the patience for a time-lapse series and it would have been difficult under the circumstances. I had hoped to get a shot of it emerging though.

I identified the unknown one as a yellow migrant. The caterpillars are fussy about the trees they feed on and we happen to have a cassia brewsteri which is one of their favourites. They have quite pretty flowers earlier but have no flowers and few leaves left now.

Lots of rain and occassional warm weather equals humidity -- very good for flowers, good for some animals...feels like spring to them, everything is glowing and growing. I can grow anything in Australia and I do not have to put a semi-tree inside the house. At the moment I have my lemon tree in my kitchenette... and all over the formal dining room.

I was trying to look for the EXIF of this tree but it doesn't have any...you almost got this close up and it looks similar to an orchid although this is a tree and lots of bunches of flowers in them. Beautiful!!!

Brian, Izzie's idea of a time-lapse would have been good if it had been practicable. to get the whole process.

Greg, there weren't any cabbages in the vicinity, the nearest was in our fridge.

Tony, an ex-friend of mine....they live in Florida and during around September (I know it was that time..) monarch butterflies were in season and she has a butterfly garden. What she does is put a cocoon in a clear bottle with holes on the cover and does this time-lapse shoots. When the butterfly is ready she let them go...it was a beautiful process really...just a thought for you if you see one of those cocoons...
