Mumbles Lighthouse & Pier (Part 2)

    Good morning all,

So I went back down there this morning, the weather was much better! I took a lot of shots which I will go back and post process more when I get some time. Below are some of my favourite ones which I processed this morning when I got back, over breakfast

The first 4 are very similar so would like feedback on which everyone prefers, and as always C&C welcomed

Matt, a nice set of images. From the point of view interest and composition, it's no.2 for me. Two other thoughts from me are that they lean towards blue in the spectrum (UV filter?) and I want that lighthouse to be sharper but loads of potential here for a very nice seascape.

Thanks John, I always get this problem with a blue overcast, I don't currently use a UV filter.

Matt, it's a good idea to use one at any time as lens protection but in the mountains and by the sea, it will help to eliminate the blue cast. I don't know what software you are using but if you can selectively de saturate the blue channel, that often is quite effective. It's easier for instance, than playing around with colour balance.

Cheers John I'll look into picking one up, I'm using Lightroom and I've lowered the saturation on the blue.

Definitely #5 for me; but I've never been keen on slow shutter speeds with moving water.

I like the 3rd image which, for me is a nice compromise of the sand and sea foreground. Any chance you could clone out the pylon (I guess its a pylon) to the left of the lighthouse ?

1st image horizon only, nothing of interest in all that foreground area, remaining images foreground more interesting, like 2nd best. Nicely done.

    Forgot I posted these

Thanks for all the comments guys.

Kaye, I'm not sure if its a pylon, some sort of aerial though that is probably worth cloning out

It's a toss-up between 32 and #4, but I would probably go with the 4th because it gives me the impression that the wave is advancing.

They are all good Matt but I'll go for the composition and water action of No 2, followed very closely by No 3.

It's a great time of the day to shoot before the sun has risen and I find it's the light on the water when it's calm or smoothed as these are and if you expose well you can get away without the need for GNDs.

The blue cast is very common and unless you want to play around with WB on site it's very easily sorted by adjusting in post with WB or dropping the blue as already mentioned. I'm sure you have learnt that when you have a scene like this there's a very short time to explore it and capture a few compositions before that suns too high.

Not sure why you have used ISO400 with these as you had scope to open up a bit ?

As for PP, if they were mine I would drop the highlight in the sky a bit, open up the shadows a bit to get slightly more detail in the rocks (can be done globally or locally), and a very slight increase in clarity (which will define the sky slightly more).

The water smoothing, yep I'm a fan, and a fan of unsmoothed if it's got interest.

Thanks Grahame, a lot for me to look into there

I was using Auto ISO, I am still relatively new to this photography malarkey and to be honest haven't studied much about ISO at all... Its in the pipeline though.

What am I seeing in the #5 shot? It looks as though the pier is going into the water. Is that just an illusion?

Haha no thats is a reality Dave, the Coastguard has some sort of boats in those buildings and the boats slide down into the water and then are winched back up later.
