Also, was it a shooting scenario where it just happen to be the lens on the camera at the time so you made the shot with what you had - OR - do you typically plan to 'go street' with an 85 on an APS-C?

Nikon D5200 with AF-S 85/1.8G.
A bit of both, the sun had already set and my other lenses, an UWA 10-24 and a 70-300mm just weren't cutting it, so the only available lens was the 85mm. I brought the 85mm specifically for some lowlight experimental shooting. I have other smaller focal length lenses but didn't bring them on the trip. You never know exactly what you need until you get there.
I've tried the 18-55 kit, 40mm f/2.8, and 55-200mm kit for street. The 40mm is more versatile for changing lighting conditions, the 55-200mm for changing subjects. The 10-24mm is fun, but I'm usually standing on the subjects toes to get the shot.
