What a poem! Benjy...I did not expect the last phrase...
I seem to remember that as being the last verse of a longer poem; but I can't remember the origin; it is certainly rather old, and dates back to my schooldays.
Good one Benjy!
It reminds me of when we were scattering my mother's ashes at an idyllic spot and a beautiful butterly appeared just as we finished. We looked at it as if witnessing some wonderful re-incarnation......... then I lost my balance and stood on it!
Sadly I didn't get time for a shot of it first.
not nice
Izzie,Geoff,Sharon,Jeremy, thanks for comments, much appreciated,Geoff, heard it years ago too, think it may have been Hector Nicol a Scots comedian from way back, not too sure though
Thanks for thinking of me on your dedication..truly appreciate it very much...
The Poetry library says that it is a lost quote and does not know who to attribute it to.
However, it was Recorded by Scottish folk sing Matt McGinn. About 30 years ago
A version of above is also attributed to Elvis, Robert Burns and many others.
Mike, I am knocking on the door of 60 this year and i remember reciting this ditty, cursewords and all, with a guilty pleasure. I knew my parents would highly disapprove, my spry grandmother would haul out the rolling pin and the bar of soap and the earths would open and I would go straight to h*ll.
Anyhow, Bernard, after all these years, it is amazing that the same ditty still can trigger the quick guilty look behind the back.
My best,
Marie
Started with an Angelic voice
ending was only a devil's deed
The little one was Heaven's choice
Cruelty is always hell's breed
Marie,thanks for comment,I heard it years back too,Matt McGinn.....Memories
