Who was the tool catalog photographer?

Sometime back there was a discussion on lighting metal and reflective objects here on the forum. Someone mentioned a photographer that, if I understand correctly, taught himself techniques for photographing tools and metal objects that are reflective. I believe he wrote a book on the subject.

I believe the tool catalog sold wood working hand tools in the 50's and 60's. (best that I can recall)

I was wondering if someone could give me his name again. I've lost my link...and mind.

The one I know is Ray Pilon, who spent many years as Head of Photography at Lee Valley Tools and did their catalog photography and last time I spoke with him, did a lot of work for Canadian Woodworking Magazine. I ran into him a few weeks ago

Unfortunately, I don't think he ever wrote a book.

The best reference I've found for lighting difficult objects (shiny and transparent especially) is http://www.amazon.com/Light-Science-...ence+and+magic. Earlier editions are still available, and cheaper.

Thanks for letting us know about the upcoming fifth edition of Light: Science and Magic. I've got the fourth edition and treat it as my Bible of Light. I'll pre-order the fifth edition and will be satisfied if I only get one more tidbit of helpful information not included in the fourth edition.

I just ordered the fourth edition. LOL happens every time. That's ok I am reading f.64 so I am in a time warp any way.

I have the 4th edition; it's my bible for lighting.

I looked it up on Google to get a link, and saw the 5th edition. I see the new edition has a new chapter on setting up a studio (and chapter 8 has changed title), and clearly a few other things added. For my birthday wish list perhaps!

Manfred, that is the guy I was looking for albeit I thought he had written a book.

I do believe the book, "Light: Science and Magic" is what was mentioned when his name came up.

I think between the google search and the video I have plenty of reference now.

I'm fairly sure he hasn't written a book, but I'll check next time I run into him. I've taken a couple of lighting courses from him (one on studio lighting and one on small flash); I do run into him every so often.
