    Evening on the Beach

This is my first real attempt at taking any shots after dark, I got absolutely soaked up to the knees while taking these and it was an uphill mile hike back to the car with boots full of water

Anyway here are some of the shots, I have tried to shoot/PP these to give a minimalist style C&C welcome.

    Hi Matt
I prefer the tones in the first 2 images, the warmth rather than the cool of the later shots works best to me.
Of the first 2, the second with the stones/rocks in the foreground makes it the pick of the bunch.

Thanks Kay, yea the weather changed after the sun went down. There is a tennis ball in the second shot which the tide brought in just before I took it, it literally stopped 5 yards in front of me

Nice set Matt, and I can see you made the most of your time there achieving a number of different 'looks'.

Of the first two my preference is No 2 due to the enhanced reflective colour in the foreground water.

Of the remaining my preference is No 7 due to the lesser detail of the water increasing the prominence of the rock jutting out from the left.

So exactly what do you class as 'after dark'

Oh...was that a tennis ball? I like the way you had captured the changing atmosphere of these shots. I am sure you had enjoyed this session, drowning boots or not... experience makes the best teacher. Now that you know better, you'd bring a fisherman's outfit in your next outing this way...My favourite is #1 and that includes my curiousity of the greenish part of the rope that grace the scene. I love that.

I agree, Its a good series. Number two would be my choice as it has plenty of interest in the foreground. Nice warm feel to it as well.. even though it was probably freezing

Number two for me as well. The series does make a great story on the tide coming in and the changing conditions. Any danger of getting trapped on the beach if the tide encircles you?

    Re: Evening on the Beach

#2 for me and also #4 Matt. #5 & #6 don't do a lot for me probably because the faster shutter speed doesn't do the water justice to my eye and makes the scene a bit busy.
Does anyone else get a feeling that the perfectly level horizon in some of these shots (#3 and perhaps #4 especially) appears slightly crooked because of the way the light plays across the beach just below the horizon?

A nice set. I like to see them as a series presumably taken over time as the sun sets, and would not want to express preferences.

I would have been tempted to keep it as a strict series with exactly the same scene for each of them even though it might compromise the composition of the individual images a little.

Cheers Grahame, they are also my two favourites. Ha, I did question myself when I typed 'after dark', I should of typed 'after the sun went down'

Thanks Izzie I had waterproof boots/trousers on Izzie but I didn't expect the tide to come up that quickly!

Cheers Trevor, no danger of getting trapped... the beach is very long and the footpath to get back up the cliff was directly behind me, I made sure of that

Thanks Tony, with regards to keeping the same composition... I would of drowned

Nice images Matt. I like 2,3,5 and 7 and my favs are 5 and 7 ( I couldn't choose the best between them). The land on the left in 5 seems just a little bit dark to me , so if the image was mine I would fix it.

Thanks Binnur, you are right, the cliff is too dark - I'll have a look at it
