    A Sunrise without Sun

Don't you just hate it when you get up early for a sunrise shot and get to site only to find there is so much cloud you won't get much out of the sun ! Anyway, I tried to get something out of this one and would be interested to see if you think "it's a keeper". Shot at Forster on the central NSW coast.

Pls click to enlarge the image.

At the risk of being obvious, of course this is a keeper -- quite a bit better than just a keeper!

Consider toning down the bright tones in the sky and reflected in the sea on the left so the brightest area of the sky is at the point of land. Perhaps also brighten that bit of light at that point of land. That's because there is such a nice imaginary diagonal line connecting the nearest point of rocks on the left with the distant point of land on the right. That diagonal along with bright light in that area of the sky will lead our eye very nicely through the image.

Definitely a keeper. I especially adore the sky, blue tones and the hint of silky water on the rocks.

It can feel like a show stopper, but looks like you persevered. Nice capture.

Thanks for commenting Mike, Christina, Jim and John.

Mike interesting comments, the diagonal line to which you refer is one feature of the image I do like. Here is a modified version in line with your suggestions and also a cropped version which I had already toyed with and which I think gives more emphasis to this diagonal line.

    Certainly a keeper Dave.

Often the best ones are without the sun prominent in the image.

At the risk of just repeating what everybody else has already said This is most definitely a keeper. There is so many possibilities with this shot. You could edit it in numerous different ways and it will always look amazing. A real special photo.

On a personal note. I prefer the original edit. The one with the dramatic sky and the small line of rocks. The edited one takes something away from the shot in my opinion.

No sun necessary. It's a lovely photo. Just one of the many moods of the sea. And after all, any morning we're here to see is a good one.

I love the image, especially your second crop. Using Viveza, I globally reduced the blue 30% and globally increased the structure 30%. What do you think?

    A Sunrise without Sun

I think that this puts more emphasis on the rocks and vegetation but, doesn't detract from the sea and sky...

Indeed Dan, couldn't agree more. And win or lose with the shot, just being out in the fresh air is very pleasant (in our sensible climates anyway).

Thanks for commenting and thank you too Raymond.

I think it worked out very well. A different mood than a sunny sunrise but not less interesting.

I like the original shot as is, Dave...I am in the don't-change-a-thing camp. +1 to Chris' comment...

I too prefer the original composition, Dave. I might try to burn the left side of the sky and then dodge it beyond the headland, though. Plus a bit of sharpening to bring out detail in the sky.

Great; Sun can be a Hero, even without being in the frame
