This is how I like my waterfalls

Last September we went on the famous Waterfall Walk at Ingleton in Yorkshire. At the top is Thornton Force. OK it is not like Niagara or Yosemite, but it is one of the best waterfalls in England.

There is a difference of opinion as to how one should photograph waterfalls. Do you capture the separate drops falling (with a fast shutter speed), or do you blur them (with a slow shutter speed). This must be a subjective choice, but I include this to show how I like my waterfalls. The exposure is 1/160, f/7.1 and ISO 400. At this distance, it does show the water breaking up and not blurred.

The waterfall was not the easiest to photograph on that day. The waterfall itself was in shade, but the trees to the right, and the rocks on the left were in the sun. I did think about cropping, but I think this gives the setting for the waterfall that a crop would remove.

If you look carefully, you can see a couple of lads behind the waterfall. In my youth (that would be nearly sixty years ago), when I last visited, I did the same thing myself!

I can take my waterfalls either way, depends on the surroundings. With this image, I think more emphasis should be placed on the surrounding greenery and water below. Nice effort.

It really depends on the subject at the time for me but in general I would lean towards this approach. Did you do the circular route. One of the more photogenic walks around this part of the world. Starts in a woodland ravine and ends up on the open fells. A couple of years since we did it but maybe one day soon again.

I like them the same way John. Nice shot, it gives a better indication as to the volume of water actually going over the falls IMO.

Yes, we did the circular route. We decided that, at our ages (70 and 72), we were fulfilled. I took lots of waterfall pictures on that day and, together with some from the Aysgarth Falls, they form my desktop background.

John, I like the way you did it but honestly waterfalls are so lovely I like most anyway they can be taken.

I share the same thoughts, John as to my preference for waterfalls. Not so keen on smooth falls myself...and +1 to Alan's comment on the show of volume of water...and yes, the two people behind the waterfall is a bonus in itself if they are more visible...I've done this many times in the past in Oz...not so much now as I am on the health management age myself...I'd like to see more of my grandchildren sans the bandages and the broken bones and while I can still chase them...

Definitely a fast shutter speed for me; the faster the better, within reason, and the same goes for surf etc. I like to photograph what I'm actually seeing.

The shot could do with a bit more saturation for me.

On the subject of waterfalls, it really depends on the scene and what sort of image/mood I'm trying to convey.
