    Bubbles

Just for fun... These may not be fantastic images, but I thought some of you bubble enthusiasts might enjoy these. I will find a better location next time so we don't have the mailboxes in the back ground.

Me too John...I have to expand in lytebox before I can see the mailboxes...Thank you for thinking of me...All good shots. In #1 -- your boy with just the bubble can be a separate image by itself without your happy half. In #2...I love this interactive shot between your man and your child --- he looks like a mini me of your husband. #3 -- I really cannot get that one can get to make such big bubbles. (Now I am thinking of my little grandchild. She will be thrilled with this...) #4 is so cute...Sonny boy here can actually get inside that bubble and I can just hear his laughter all throughout this exercise here...What a lovely family outing you have, mailbox or not, you have achieved your purpose for these shots. I hope you had fun too after...

I didn't either and I still don't understand exactly. Please explain the bubble-making contraption. DIY or store-bought? What is it made of? How is the bubble produced?

Thanks, Brain! I just now printed it and am going to take it next door to give to the grandfather of the family. He might want to do this for his grandchildren, who are the perfect age to enjoy this.

    Re: Bubbles

Thanks for the comments everyone. And thanks for posting that link, Brian! That's pretty close to the setup we have. Our "bubble sticks" are pretty long, so great for an adult, but shorter ones are better for little people. (If they accidentally get the cotton string dirty and then dip it in the bucket again it can ruin the solution.) There are many different giant bubble solution recipes out there, and some work better than others. As I recall, the one with corn syrup was not successful for us. I've read that the humidity in the air plays a large part in determining what ingredients are needed for strong, long lasting bubbles. So, what works in one climate might not work in another. I'll post the recipe we like the best below. One other thing to keep in mind is that dry, hot, and sunny weather will "dry out" the bubbles and cause them to pop, whereas humid, cool weather is much better. We did these early in the morning, when there was still dew on the grass, and it worked well. Anyway, yes, it's a blast... Somewhat addicting, especially for the grownups, but fun for the kiddos, too. It takes time to get the technique down, but practice makes better!

    1 gallon distilled water
2 cups Dawn non- concentrated dish soap
1 1/2 tsp J-lube (or, you can use one 3oz tube of personal lubricant, such as KY jelly)

Now, I realize this seems like a very weird third ingredient... But I can explain! The lubricant causes the bubbles to be very slippery and stretchy, which means they won't pop nearly so easily. I'm guessing because we live in a fairly dry climate, our bubbles have to be extra strong, whereas in more humid regions, other solutions might work just fine. J-lube is a powdered lubricant used in cattle obstetrics, so a little goes a long way... Just whisk it with a couple cups of the water, then add to the rest of the water, and then gently stir in the soap. If using KY jelly, empty the tube into a microwave safe dish and warm it (a few seconds at a time) until it becomes more liquid, then mix it with the water and then the soap.

Provided dirt and debris don't get into the solution, it lasts quite a while, and it does tend to work better if you make it a day in advance.

And the most important instruction: have fun!

How neat! I would have loved doing this as a kid. In fact, it would be fun to do it as an old man!

Wow, it took me forever to figure out what you were talking about, Izzie! I get it now! Haha, thanks for the laugh! Now I'm wondering how many times I've misspelled that name!

Kristy...I was talking to my children and my one and only grandchild yesterday on Skype on my husband's pooter. I promised them that when I come over for a visit, I will play with them on the biggest bubble in the whole wide world...!!! Now I have to prepare for that event when I can spare the time to go over again...sometimes weather temp there can be muggy. So will your recipe works better?

That's great, Izzie! They'll love it! I would have to admit that I've never had the opportunity to try this recipe in a super muggy climate, but when I lived near Lake Michigan I had friends who had great success using a similar recipe. It was quite humid there. Here in eastern Washington it's rarely "humid" by most people's standards. We like to do these either early in the morning, or on a rainy day in between showers, as they seem to work best when the air is moist. Hot, sunny, dry days are no good at all. So, I'd say you'll be fine! There are several YouTube videos demonstrating the technique for making the bubbles, so you might want to check some out... It takes a bit of practice, but is totally worth it! Good luck, and let me know if you have any other questions... I'm happy to help if I can.

    Re: Bubbles

I was talking to about an 8-year-old about these large bubbles and she explained that she had stood inside a bubble that had been created by a machine. She didn't remember anything about the machine other than it created the bubble that enclosed her.

Beautiful shots.... but could you order them differently? In my brain they go in 3,2,1,4 sequence. Just a thought for storytelling
