first prime lens

i put in on both the xti and the t5i .. did some inside stuff and outside ... one of the kit lens is a 18-135 which is nice and all but i'm really liking the size of this one .... although i don't think this will be my goto landscape lens ... guess that will come later

Consider posting larger photos. Even at this small size, it seems that you got the nose and tongue in focus but not the eyes. Most people would consider getting the eyes sharply in focus even if nothing else is in focus.

The 40/2.8 is not a “fast prime lens” and it probably is only about 1~ 1⅓ Stops faster than the EF-S 18 to 135 set at FL = 40.

I think more to the point than any DoF differential, would be the size & weight differential and also the fact that the 40/2.8 only has ONE Focal Length.

This last point generally means an entirely new way of thinking, for many photographers, who have only or mostly only ever used Zoom Lenses.

I was being facetious with that statement since the dog's nose is in focus and the eyes are not.

BTW: I have a 40mm pancake. Canon had a sale on this lens a year or two ago. Refurbished versions were so cheap that I couldn't resist one.

I think that I like it better on a full frame camera than on a crop camera.

Yes, 40/2.8 (and also 35/2 which I used to have) works better on 5D Series for me, too, rather than on APS-C.

I absolutely love a 35mm lens on a full frame body. The 40mm is close to that. Actually, IMO, if it was technically possible (maybe it is - I don't know) a 35mm pancake would have been a better focal length for both full frame and for 1.6x crop cameras...
