Another one of the steam specials. I think I may have posted this one before but occasionally I go back to images if I think I can make a better job of them e.g. if my PS ability has moved on. This has been push processed quite a bit and I have added some structure using Vivesa. As always comments and crit appreciated.

I did not expect a train, John...I expected a baby version of the ship Queen Elizabeth but this is a good shot...with a bit of added noise for effect with the conversion...well done!

Looks OK, John, but there is quite a bit of noise or sharpening problems with the smoke; particularly to the right of the train.

When faced with these issues, I often do separate edits on duplicate layers then combine them. Or failing that, I use selections to separate out various effects. Not sure what you have in the way of software though.

I have one suggestion - the right hand edge isn't (for me) contributing much, so if mine, I'd crop so the rail goes into the very corner of the frame.

As a lad, I always slightly preferred the LMS crimson to other company's liveries, so in some ways, I miss the colour here, although, of course, B&W always suits such a subject.

John - unfortunately, I used the original mono to push process but it was basically slightly less cropped and with a full tonal range. I still have the original colour image though.
Izzie - there was a time in the 1920's and 1930's when like ships, railway locomotives were named after the royal family. Their modern equivalents are still named today. This engine was commissioned into service in November 1933 and is still going strong.
Peter - you have a lot in your part of the world of course.
Geoff - you are right. When I first read your comment, I suspected that you were seeing the grain that I had introduced but on close inspection, there is quite a lot of noise. Your suggested approach to eliminate it would work best (I use CS6) because I can then add the grain again afterwards.
Dave not sure about losing the RHS. I understand what you mean but it would make the engine too central. It's a bit too central now. Perhaps I should Puppet Warp the rails a bit.

I love it. Yes there is a bit of noise or sharpening artifacts but its still a very good image. I think the noise gives the image an old look to it.

Thanks Chris. I agree, this sort of subject tends to suit a contrasty mono treatment.
