Surat, an emerging city in the state of Gujarat, India, is known as the textile city of Gujarat. And, the epithet is perfectly suited to the city. The textile industry is one of the oldest and the most widespread industries in Surat. A major part of the city population is associated with the textile industry.

The textile industry in Surat is mainly engaged in the activities of yarn production, weaving, processing as well as embroidery.

Surat is well known for its synthetic products market. It is mainly engaged in the production and trading of synthetic textile products.

I have tried to capture some pictures during my visit to some plants recently. Please share your comments and suggestions for the same.

Nice perspective shots on all of them...I cannot imagine workers to be using only a pair of open slippers in a factory setting. Isn't that dangerous?

thnx Izzie. These are texturing units. It is not dangerous that way.

Can anyone visit these shops? I visited one years ago as part of a tour group; which ended up on the display room floor where fabrics were offered for sale. Did your visit end the same way? Nice series.

Factory visit is not permitted to all unless and until you dont have permission to do that. I am working with an Export Promotion Council related to textiles and leading the regional office. I had a delegation from Vietnam, so I took them for the factory visit. I always carry a digicam in my purse. I just inquired with them whether I can click some pictures or not. They gave permission I could click some. . I have some pic of weaving unit too, but i am not happy with those. Dyeing and printing unit I didnt vist, but planing to visit .

I like what you trying to achive Tijal, These kind of perspective shots can be very tricky to do well especially in such uneven light, the 3rd is the best for me, the other 2 i personally think the light in the forground is too harsh. im assuming youve used flash on these 2. Id try again and see if you can get them withou people moving so that you can set up a tripod and use ambient light. I know it probably impossible for you to set that up but in ideal circumstances thats what i would try.

Thanks Mark for your valuable input. All the pictures have been taken by simple digicam on auto mode. They generally dont allow photography inside the plant. But yes your suggestions are really very helpful in case i get opportunity to do a proper photo shoot . Thanks once again.

In #1, his head is in a rather poor light area and with the last scene you are fractionally tight at the top.

Just employ the same techniques you use in your street photography and concentrate on the composition and work on the areas that have interesting lighting, and you'll end up with strong images.

thnx for your feedback. I have some shots without human elements too. I will post them shortly .

Pictures are taken with normal digicam, so many things were not in my control here.

I think it is less the camera and more the composition; a different camera will still have the same issues if you shoot the scene the same way. I'd urge that you think about how to make the shot more interesting by taking advantage of the machinery, light and people.

I've always found that lighting is the most important ingredient in an image; bad lighting + good composition = bad image.

Agree with your statement about camera and composition. This was my 1st attempt. Next time I think i will surely be better.
