    PP Opinions

Hi all, would be interested in anyones ideas on what could be made from this huge lathe that I shot recently.
The first of each is the original and the second my attempt at making it a more interesting image.
By all means have a crack at your own version, I found it to be a very interesting piece of machinery and I'm sure someone with more talent than me at post can produce something special.
A re-shoot from a different angle is no problem if needed, though I think shooting from an elevated angle might be my only option as there is an ugly roof section covering it so a shot from below mightn't work
    Any ideas?
    Regards, Greg

I did a little work on the lathe but tiny pic is not cooperating. Maybe later? nope still not working

For a reason or reasons unknown your photo will not upload either using tinypics or when i try to upload it into my blog. It starts but quickly stalls.

What great machines!! I like your processing. It made me think of this link I looked at.....this guy shoots in total darkness and uses a flashlight with a snoot to photograph his subjects....I once tried something like this...harder than it looks, but he gets great results....wonder if you shot this at different exposures and then processed in some from each, whether you could mimic the light in his...? Just thinking aloud!

Not a comment on the pp, but since I live near Manchester, I looked up the company who made it. They were (mostly) steam engine manufacturers, and shipped a fair few out to New South Wales, and at least one to Tasmania. By an odd coincidence, the Tasmanian one is now preserved by the Welsh Mountain Railway, which I rode on last year. Maybe it pulled me!

I wonder what the lathe was for. Where did you discover it?

Small world Dave, should imaging it was used for machining parts for the loco's etc, I will try and find out a bit more detail about it for you.

Thanks Binnur, took me ages to come up with something I thought looked ok. I liked the way the gears are on several layers.

    Re: PP Opinions

As the owner and user of a baby brother made in Asia I found the first shot the most interesting. I am guessing you found it in Tasmania where my other guess if was used to service wheels/axles of locos and rolling stock. I did once see a machine at the Hillside Works [ NZ Railway Dunedin Workshop] turning chunks the size of my little finger off a wheel ... very impressive. That machine was enclosed for safety reasons.

The other shots I assess as photographs where to me they are all too wide to be of interest.
As I guess you are using an Adobe product I suggest adjusting the black and white points, a little lightening of the 'red wheel' area and a touch of sharpening ?

The lathe is interesting in that the drive is at the opposite end of the machine to what I have ever seen or read about

edit... there seems to be a bit missing with I wonder what drove/adjusted the cross-slide using that pully wheel? perhaps for adjustment from a safe distance when the chips were flyoing

Well it was just a gremlin on my side. This is just a quick pp. A recrop, sepia mask, some edge detection, a depth merge and a bit of brightening.

Looks good Brian, I like the sepia tone seems to show up the rust nicely. The reason I cropped tightly on this image was to remove the ugly roof section, perhaps there is two photos here one with my crop and one starting from the rear of the main gear taking in the back of the image. Think I'll give it a go

Just playing around and probably not what you expected. Composition does not work for me but at least a different approach.

The first one is a little bit dark for me too and man o man! that looks huge!...the second and third are all done beautifully...I like lathes, the grease, the dirt and dusts all make up for the shot. I particularly like #2...detailed well. Good find.

On the contrary Paul that is exactly the crop I was thinking of in my reply to Brian.
Perhaps the composition doesn't work but as you said its a different approach and I find it interesting to pick apart the image to make new ones.
    Thanks for posting.
