    Rooms with a view (Deriliction)

My wife , daughter and I went up to a place in Ireland called Torr Head which is up on the north coast of Antrim in the countryside. As always I brought my camera along because I new there would be breath taking views. We where only going up for a pick nick and as it was just after mid-day on a particularly miserable day weather wise I didn't even bring my tripod. As expected the views where amazing and I took a lot of shots ( My wife and daughter had great fun photo bombing them) but I new they wouldn't ad up to much. We walked right to the tip of Torr`s Head where we found an old radio station up there. I am not to sure as to weather it was used as a commercial radio station or as something else but any way the building was fantastic and I grabbed the opportunity to try some dereliction shots with a difference. I took a few shots of the window frames which have amazing detail in the decay and I wanted to incorporate the beautiful scenery outside as well. I tried to make the views through the windows look like paintings hanging on the walls. Please feel free to comment and criticise as you see fit.

In This third shot. If you look into the distance you can see Scotland.

Looks good to me; a nice balance between dark interiors and bright outside landscapes. Maybe a fraction too much ceiling in #1 but nothing serious.

I am usually not a fan of derelict buildings but, these are really different! I like the comparison of the beautiful exterior views with the ramshackle interiors. Quite a contrast!

Very interesting shapes and colours. It's usually hard to get the exposure good with inside/outside shots like these but they are good. It's a derelict building but looks like prime real estate.

I do like this set Chris, you managed your wish (I tried to make the views through the windows look like paintings hanging on the walls) in the first image well done. If I had to choose a favourite it would be the second image. People would pay a good price to live in a property with a view from that window. Though I suspect it would be a bleak place in the winter.

Lovely set of images, although the one with Scotland in it is obviously the best (!). Are these single frame shots or have you bracketed and blended, or used flash to light the interior? The exposure balance for 'inside' and outside is excellent. I note you saying you didn't have a tripod.

Hi Donald. Thanks for the kind words. These are all single frame shots. I had deliberately underexposed so as to get a good exposure of the outside. I used the pop up flash to shed some light on the interior. When I got to processing the images I noticed that the inside was still pretty under exposed but I shot in raw so I was able to bring back the light and details. I had preempted that I might have to edit these as composites and shot a few different exposures but fortunately I was able to edit these without having to blend a second exposure together, and of course the one with Scotland is the finest There is a place close to where I shot these images where you can see Scotland even closer at only 12 miles. Maybe ill see you through the super zoom some day

Thanks for looking Richard, Tony, Peter and John.

I kinda like #1 and #2...particularly #2 but you'll have to remove that something sticking at the top left hand side of the outside window. It doesn't contribute much to the image anyway so you can afford to lose it, whatever it is...I like the framing in all of them. In #3, in my opinion, to balance this one, if you are willing to remove the blue thingie at the left??? You have enough dereliction in the shot to exclude that one too...but what do I know? -- just that these shots are all well executed. Excellent shots!

I like them all Chris I would desaturate or change the color of the blue thing on the left in the last image as it is a bit distracting. Very nice contrast between the beautiful landscape and worn out building.

In which case they are really good images. Takes quite a bit of skill to get them looking like that from single frames. Well done.

I quite like these. But then I do like old buildings. This is different
in that the image was captured from the inside. great detail in all of them.

Thanks again Donald, Tom and Irene. If you look at the scenes through the window you can see that i used the rule of thirds on just country scenes.

Love these Chris, you've done really well to capture great compositions of the landscape within the windows themselves to.

    Nice work

I like the composition in #1. Whereas there is no floor, the ceiling provides a leading line to the window, I think you saw this and was no accident. You appear to put a lot of thought into your shots. I envy you the local, I was only in Ireland once (the land of my maternal great grandparents), I was chasing after a girl I met in the Isle of Man. Wonderful imagery for photographing, I envy you, wonderful set Chris. I would love to see the EXIF on these.

    I think that's called tension.

Hi Richard. Very kind words. It is true that I now put a lot more thought into my photographs, The members of this web site can take credit for that as it was with there help that I have learned to stop and think about what I want my photo to look like as opposed to just snapping. I am not sure how to get the EXIF data but when I get home from work I will look and see what settings I used. Thanks again
