What to do with some old Canon film stuff?

I've been asked to get rid of it by a friend who has not treated it gently.

    Major bits are:

    A-1 camera
    EOS 650 camera

    Tokina AT-X 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5 Ø62mm
Canon EF 35-70mm f/3.5-4.5 Ø51mm (measured filter thread)

    Honeywell Strobonar 100
Nissin 4000GW and Nissin Remote Senser for same
    Cannon Speedlight 300EZ

No idea if any of the above even works and no desire to buy film, batteries, etc to find out.

A bit of research into eBay "sold items" says that the cameras aren't worth much at all, fifty bucks total before charges and shipping, if he's lucky . . . .

Shall I just hand it all back?

There is probably someone out there who would like it, but I suspect the effort required to find them would not be justified by the prices realised. 'fraid I'd be suggesting that it's time to put them into the recycling centre.

I sold (almost gave away) all my Canon film gear shortly after I purchased my first DSLR (which was a Canon 10D). That gear included an A-1 and an AE-1P. Too bad, they were great cameras in their time. Its just that the world passed them by.

If I had gear like you mention, I would find out of any local colleges need the gear. Unfortunately, there are many colleges who persist in teaching film (although I heard a rumor of one that teaches painting on cave walls with charcoal)... If you cannot find a college to give the gear to, I would see if there is a thrift shop from a non-profit agency that would accept the gear.

In the USA we can deduct a fair value for gear donated to non profit agencies.

Last year I decided to get rid my high-end Nikon film gear and chemical darkroom. (I kept most of the lenses but had them converted by John White to work on my digital bodies.) I discovered you aren't going to get very much selling this unless, perhaps, you get lucky and find a collector or someone really keen on "retro". So, I contacted the Art department at the local university and they grabbed at the stuff. They start out all their photography students in film first, so as to develop strong discipline before going digital.

It felt good doing something philanthropic and knowing my beloved gear would be put to good use.

    Best wishes,
    JH

Thanks all for the advice. I'll ask my friend if he wants to just give it away (I took it with the expectation of getting him a buck or two). The lazy part of me just wants to hand it back but this thread has stimulated my dormant conscience unfortunately
