Very nice, David! Great technique! What equipment do you use for these extreme close ups?

These are species which I try to stay well clear of, David. There are so many of those little grey flies that they are difficult to identify; at least unless you have several camera angles so you can follow the keys.

The last one has distinctive wing veins which place it amongst the 'blowflies' (Calliphotidae) where bluebottles and a great many others are to be found. Maybe someone else can recognise it.

All absolutely, stunning! (As usual) However, I pick #3 as my favourite for the beautiful green leafy background and the sense of height.

    David,

    Great images.

If you want a source for fly identification, you could check this: http://diptera.info/news.php

A couple of technique questions, if you don't mind--

How much extension do you use? My standard bug-hunting rig is a crop (7D generation 1) with a 36mm extension so that I can fill as much of the frame as possible. It would take more extension with my 5D3 to get the same proportion filled.

Also, what is your sharpening procedure? I am thinking about changing mine. I generally sharpen in LR, and even though the general rule is to use a small radius for detailed shots, I often go to 2 pixels because it makes detail stand out. However, I think it might add harshness.

    Thanks

    Dan

    Re: Fly Mix

David, how small are these flies? My favourite is #1 because I like the zipper at the top of its head...the zipper holder is the antenna I suppose??? those two things at the front of its face? The third one is also nice because it has a better background, green, kinda matches the brown colour of the insect (is this a bug or an insect? whatever...) I like the detail of the eyes of the first one...

All right I am outta here...

    Re: Fly Mix

Thank's Dan, I will have a look at that site later.

Normally I use exactly the same rig as you Dan, but decided to have a go with the 5d, I cannot remember just how many tubes I used for these images only that I started with the 36mm and played about with the other two, sorry

As for sharpening I also use LR, as you know every image is different but as a rule of thumb I start with NR at 30% then Sharpening 70%, Radius between 1 and 1.4 followed with Detail between 25 and 35 again depending on image!

    Hope this helps bud

    Re: Fly Mix

Hi Izzie, they are between 5 and 10mm, #2 being the smallest, as for the zipper holder I do not have a clue but I think your description is better than any book could tell me
