Following on from my "Evening Tour"

In my thread An Evening Tour LINK I made mention to James Cook in a little quiz of which rpcrowe was the winner. I did promise that I would arrange another tour and that Richard would get the best seat on the bus (a little bit of poetic licence taken there )
I was going to use "A Cooks Tour" as the title for this thread, as I had always associated the term with Captain James Cook. Only to find out it is actually attributed to the travel company starting with Thomas (etc.) (I didn't want to advertise the actual travel company here).

All aboard the bus tour is starting, fasten your seat belts and we're off.

#1 A granite monument which marks the site of the cottage that James Cook was born in.

#2 Included for those who are in to Latitude and Longitude. The museum was behind me when I made image one above. Both the granite monument and the museum stand in what is now a public park.

#3 St Cuthberts Church Marton which is where James Cook was baptised.

    #3a An alternative view.

#4 Right the next stop on the tour is Great Ayton, here we have a statue of the young James Cook which stand in what is known as High Green. The centre of the village.

#5 The school which James Cook attended when his family moved to Great Ayton. The building is now the Captain Cook Schoolroom museum.

#6 This obelisk marks the place where James Cook's parents had a cottage. Despite the words on the plaque at 7a below it's believed that Captain James Cook never lived here with his parents as when they lived in this location he had by then left on his exploration journeys. But...his Father was a James too, so maybe the plaque isn't telling "Porkies" or is it?

    #7 Obelisk Plaques

    #7a With a possible "Porkie"

    # 8 I had to delve in to my 2010 archive for the next two images. This is where the cottage from Great Ayton is now. Having been demolished brick by brick with each piece being numbered ready for it's reconstruction in Melbourne.

Following on from my "Evening Tour"

    # 9 Another interesting set of words which I suspect may again contain a few little "Porkies" or could it be just poetic licence.

So there we have it a very brief tour which included a long haul flight or two, I hope you have enjoyed the tour and are not too jet lagged . If I've bored the pants off you please accept my humble apologies

I deliberately omitted to include an image of Whitby (from where Captain Cook first went to sea) as my previous tour included an image of its Abbey.

That's all for now folks; you're tour guide is off for a swift half.

Peter - love it. And if you don't mind I may just pinch the idea as I have pictures (yet to be processed) of a tour around a distillery we did recently......

Kaye feel free to use the tour bus as long as you return it ready for use, as I shall be visiting The Isle of Islay at the backend of next week so I may need the bus for that tour but....I don't think I will get time to visit all eight distilleries on Islay.

Thanks for the tour. Young James looks like a skinny little fellow. You have suggested something for me to see next time I am in Melbourne.

You may need a bus in Islay. It may not be advisable to drive after you have been there a while.

Bruce and Tony thanks for jumping on the bus, looking around and taking time to comment.

@ Tony, the cottage in Melbourne is well worth a look, nice walks around the park area too. WRT Islay tour, Scotland has since December 2014 a a lower drink drive limit. So I wont be having one for the road. The new limit is 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, reduced from 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. I'm not sure how that equates to a Dram of Single Malt.

Thanks Peter. Whilst waiting for a ferry to Arran, we met two guys who had been to Islay for the weekend - one on a pushbike and his brother providing support on his motorbike. The aim of the weekend was for the cycling brother to visit all distilleries as a sponsored bike ride..................my husband couldn't see any of his mates sponsoring him to do it !!! Enjoy and I hope they let you take photographs - we had a mixed reception on the three or four we visited all over Scotland from no photographs whatsoever due to health and safety reasons (!!!???) to Springbank in Campbeltown who let us take photographs of absolutely everything. It is the latter that are waiting my attention.
