    Air Show

I guess this one fits here - ish - I took my lady to David Austin Roses on Sunday, we had to be in Lincoln on Monday for my wifes mother to scatter her husbands ( my wifes father ) ashes so I thought to take her out for the day before and she loves Roses. Unfortunately the location is 2 fields away from RAF Cosford and they were having a Air Show, so it got a bit noisy, I was photographing roses but had to give this a go - even with a macro lens on - not too bad I think all things considered, not what you normally use a macro lens for !

    A F18 Hornet I believe,
    Air Show

then the historic flypast of Hurricanes and Spitfires
    Air Show

The Red Arrows were of course part of the display
    Air Show

Then I had to swap over to the D5200 with the 70-300 on it for this one - the last flying Vulcan Bomber, and this was its last flight as it has now lost its airworthy certificate so it wont be seen again in the air so it is the end of an era in British military aviation

Not bad at all Mark. Like the Hurricanes and Spitfires the best.

Mark, you did not know there was an airshow close to the roses before you went?

All nice ones, Mark...I like #1. You are right about the F18 Spitfire...In an airshow I always take the 18-200 lens that I have as it is the best one for general airshow shots. Anything larger is not OK as you cannot get the rest of the action. Did you really intended to go the airshow? Sometimes you have to make do with what you have. Your 70-300mm did a good job with the Vulcan Bomber...Good shots...no make that excellent shots.

    Re: Air Show

That's a very high quality series of images. Just slightly slower on the shutter for the Hurricanes and Spits and you would have got a bit of movement blur on the props. But, hey ho, I'd have liked to be able to get those pics.

    Re: Air Show

Jim, thanks, yep - Honestly I was so focused on the purpose of the visit for my wife and trying to make the Sunday nice for her I did not spot the date link - I dont do airshows or aircraft really - ex RAF Aircraft Engineer - did that, played with them, moved on but yep dim of me to not spot it.

    Thanks John.

Thank you Izzie, I spent the first 10 mins at the nursery with my hands over my ears as a Eurofighter was doing the aircraft version of handbrake turns over our heads with reheat and was showing how he could not stall it - noisy does not describe it - you felt it rather than heard it.

I agree Brian, it was the Historic ones coming out that made me point the camera up in reality

Thank you Donald, unfortunately I was set up on my macro lens for roses etc and was lazy to be honest - if I pulled the shutter down to 1/250th or less it would have given the nice blur you need with propellors, but I did not want to change the setup, then change it back, plain lazy, and so made a nice shot average with a glaring fault, I knew the fault I would get and the fix and ignored it

The Vulcan however was worth the effort to get the other camera out - I have a soft spot for them, lived at RAF Scampton for many years, home of 617 Squadron (The Dambusters) so very used to seeing them flying around.

    Re: Air Show

    Very nice collection...

I noticed the clipped wing Spit...

I think that the Spitfire was/is one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built with the U.S. P-51 Mustang with Rolls engine right up there.

However, although clipping the wings was to improve certain performance (As per Wikipedia: Many Spitfires had their rounded wingtips replaced by shorter, squared off fairings to improve low-altitude performance and enhance the roll rate. These are sometimes referred to as "LF" versions) IMO, the clipped versions did not have the elegance that the rounded wing versions had.

BTW: I was going to attend an airshow at Gillespie Field, El Cajon, California today but the thermometer cranked up to over 100 F. (37.77 C) at the show and I decided that discretion was the better part of valor and stayed in my air conditioned home (which I power with solar energy)...

    Re: Air Show

Thanks Richard, completely agree with you re the clipped wings, just does not look right, effective, but lacks grace.

Sounds like the right decison to stay away at those temps - I suspect the first aiders will be kept busy and water will be sold wholesale !

Doug, its going to get one - my brother has a real passion for it so now has a matt print on platinum smooth paper - I think he likes it !

Cheers David, was not too happy with it to be honest - it is facing the wrong way but as it was against a wall over head height - not a lot I could do about it

    Re: Air Show

    Cheers Matt,

This is one of the other Red Arrows shots I took, the first is a classic 'pose' - this one is not so normal - a bit peeved they did not have the coloured smoke for this fly past, but you can see the effect of the colour from the previous fly past in the sky, and the pilot in 2nd from bottom needs a talking too about spacing
