I am contemplating a new camera body

FYI, I do a lot of photomerging merely to increase my image size and, most of my work of late
has been limited to studio stuff. Lens investment precludes me from jumping ship.

The Canon 7D MKII 20 MP goes for around $1500 and the new 5DS 50 MP beast goes for $3700.
Were I to merge my images from the crop body to the same field of view as the 5DS, they would
result in the same image size. What would be advantageous in going FF in my scenario?

Hi William,

You haven't said (and I can't remember) what you shoot with now (in terms of MP).

If you stay in same place (for same perspective), then change lens focal length to match the angle of view between bodies (FF vs APS-C), then you'll have those zillions of extra pixels in the 50MP image over the 20MP one.

For each image used in the panoramic merge; if 20 MP were 5,000 x 4,000, 50 MP would be over 8,000 x 6,000.

OK; I have used daft figures (w.r.t. aspect ratio) to keep the sums easier to understand, but you get the idea?

So, much bigger files - will your storage, computer and processing be able to keep pace?

Chauncey I was watching a video broadcast by a George Lepp, on Creative Live and he was showing some of his methods. I found the single flower images very interesting. You and he has a liking for some of the same ones. He was using Canon, he was shooting with the 180mm marco with the 2X extender and sometimes using also a 25mm extension tube. Most single image flowers he shot were with this set-up, but done as 3 rows 3 shots per row for a total of nine exposures.
So I was thinking instead of a new camera what about a new method of shooting your flowers.

I suspect this is similar to Nikon's list when the D800 / D800E came out; trying to get you to spend more money on the "pro" lenses. They forget to mention that the only way that you can get all that quality out of the camera / lens combinations is by using a heavy duty, weighted and sand-bagged tripod, shoot in ideal conditions and then print at 3ft x 6ft / 1m x 2m and then pixel peep.

For real world hand-held shots, you might not see the difference using lesser glass...

Chauncey I found a link that I am adding, it seems to be the web broadcast that I watched by creative live. It ran all day, the item about his flower images I think was in the later part of morning or shortly after lunch. I did not watch it all the way through.
I can see it working on your weeds shot, 1st shot upper left, 2nd upper middle, 3rd upper right, 4th middle right, 5th middle middle, 6th middle left and so on. I think that with the larger macro and using extension tubes which would allow him to focus even closer he could keep use a better f-stop and softer light. To me it would be the same as if I were shooting say a 15 shot pano, 5 shots per row x 3 rows only the number of degrees between shots maybe less than 1.

If I'm required to buy new glass...why stick with Canon? Besides, the ones I use most are included.

Allen, that's essentially what I do now but, I initially take numerous images of each
frame for stacking purposes.
