Never shoot in to the sun "Admiral Von Tromp"

I had a trip out shooting seascapes with a TOG friend earlier in the week. We had the trip scheduled for a month or so having had to cancel a previously arranged trip. I was determined to go out despite the best efforts of my sheep tick and Seroma.

I had hoped that I would be shooting a sunset with the setting sun sitting over the hump back whale but still with water over the wreck of the Admiral Von Tromp. Sadly the tide and sun weren't quite in synch so you just have to go with what you see in front of you.

I've processed this in LR using the grad tool to add additional control (I had a one and three stop grad on when making the image) over the sun. I've also tried a different sharpening process using luminosity layers, Unsharp Mask and smart sharpen in PS for this image.

As always for thought and comments would be appreciated.

Ideally, I would prefer the sun to be just a fraction further to the right; but you have to work with what was available so I'm not complaining.

I'm just trying to find out what that name means. It looks like the name of a 17th century Dutch admiral. I can't link it to the fact that an English fishing trawler carries his name and , if so, wrong written. If anybody could help me.

I've seen that one. It doesn't explain the name. I believe when the English are saying Van Tromp or Von Tromp they mean Tromp. Van is Dutch, von is German. It's just strugling me why an English fishing trawler is named after a Dutch admiral who fought against the English in the first Dutch-English war. And got killed at the end by the English.

Can't answer as to why an English trawler should be named after a Dutch admiral but I can confirm that the name should be "...Van Tromp". The photograph on the linked page has enough resolution to view it enlarged in Internet Explorer and the Trawlers name is quite clear.

Thanks for the link John I have never seen that image before. Interestingly the author image title is "Von" but the boat name is "Van". Thanks again John

I didn't stay on the rocks to wait for the sunset as I was hoping to get to Whitby for a sunset of the harbour. Sadly the colour didn't materialise. Having got my pants and wellies wet on the return to the beach, I dropped my fellow photographer off at his hotel and I headed for home.

Geoff I too would have liked the sun to have been setting over the rock formation that I call the humpback whale whilst there was still some water over the wreck. On this occasion that didn't happen, so I made the best of what I had. Had I been feeling fit enough the timing of the sun and tide may have been better a couple of days later.
I'm pleased enough with this rendition so much so that I've sent it off for printing at 24" by 16"

I'm learning some history thanks to this photo. Both van and von are wrong. But it's the same Tromp.

In traditional British histories, Tromp is often wrongly called "Van Tromp". There is also a story that, after his victory at Dungeness, Tromp attached a broom to his mast as a symbol that he had swept the English from the sea. The following year, the English admiral Robert Blake supposedly attached a whip to his mast as a symbol that he had whipped the Dutch off the sea. The legend inspired a song The Admiral's Broom, famously covered by Australian baritone Peter Dawson. This is now regarded by historians as dubious.

The photo is worth to be printed large size.

A photo has an artistical site and a story behind the subject. It's often the story behind it I'm looking after.

This is a great composition. Works really well but I am conscious of a margin on the left side which has been adjusted downwards overall to get the levels right for the sun and its reflection. If you can work the finished image in an application with curves Photoshop CS? you should be able to fix the high end while increasing the darker shades to match the corresponding parts of the rest of the image.

Admiral Tromp supported the Royalist cause in the English Civil War and helped to supply money and men. He later cooperated with British forces to drive the Moor pirates, who had operated from Dunkirk, out of the English Channel area.

Boats do get bought and moved to other countries. A few years ago, several French boats were purchased by English fishermen where I live. Some were renamed but others continued with their original French names. For example the Kenavo amongst others.
