Researching Macro lenses. Feedback on use in the field requested

Yes James, I have some experience with the mpe-65 mm.
After going through all different kind off macro stuff for some years, I finally tried the mpe-65. And to my surprise I found it very manageable. I prefer the mpe-65 over a 100mm lens + extension tubes. With some good technique, it is for sure 'handholdable'.
Rent one and try it out !!

At the mo I'm finding light to close down aperture is my problem that needs investment not making it harder with magnification.

Stef, I don't know what kit you use, but I use both a Canon MR 14 Ringlite and a Canon MT 24 Twinlite for macro work. The Ringlite is often available, second-hand on EBay at fairly reasonable prices. Only drawback (assuming you can attach it to your preferred lens), is that it can produce rather odd twin 'donut' reflections. Personally they don't bother me too much , but for some it is a major downer.

Have you tried using a 2x magnifying adapter on your eyepiece as an aid to focusing?

I purchased a £20 Ebay right angled one some years ago that had the option of 1x or 2x magnification, came with a mass of adaptors of which I have just found out included one that fits my recent camera purchase

Tbh I love the close up stuff but tend to be trying to be a little flexible on purchases. Keep trying to get another flash before I know it stands, triggers, brollies take it to £300 then justifying it. I know I've got plenty still to learn with my present kit.

In a some more months I'll also be deciding on my upgrade path before investing too much on glass.

I will keep an eye out though, have thought about it a few times.

Grahame I thought at first that you were referring to the right angled view finder which I have had for years, then I got smart and rethunk your post

No, I havn't is the simple answer. But, I'm searching right now for one, it would be a real help. Thanks
