Tawny Frogmouth

These birds hunt by night and disguise themselves during the day by sitting motionless in a tree blending in against the bark.
They're often mistaken for owls because when they are awake and looking at you they have an owl's large eyes and similar features.
This one was just sleeping.

Thanks for the comments. I was out with a few other photographers and one of them knew this bird was in the area and even which trees it was likely to be on so we were looking for it. Otherwise I would have missed it.

It stayed perfectly still there on that branch for at least an hour and who knows for how much longer.

They're native to Australia Matt so unless someone has introduced them you're unlikely to come across one over there.
